With less than five seconds remaining in regulation, Junior Cyclone Aubrey Schwieso was fouled, sending her to the free throw line where she made one of two shots, giving the Cyclones their second win of the season, 48-44.

Senior Spartan Cash Emgarten led the way scoring 23 points for his team, en route to a dominant 76-60 road victory over the Woodbine Tigers, earning their first win of the season.

Woodbine’s Charlie Pryor, Nicole Hoefer, and Katy Pryor were the stars of the game as the Exira-EHK Spartans fell 58-50 to open their season against them. The girls scored 17, 13, & 11 respectfully.
“I was proud of the girls effort throughout the game,” said Spartan Head Coach Tom Petersen. “I think it is a great opener for us because it really shows areas that need to be improved.”

The IKM-Manning boys basketball team wrapped up their 2022 campaign with a 14-10 record making an appearance in the 1A-7 Second Round Game losing to the ACGC Chargers 78-64, but despite losing five seniors, head coach Keith Wagner is optimistic at the start of practice.

In overtime with the Woodbine Tigers leading 48-47, Senior Tiger Nicole Hoefer was fouled, sending her to the free throw line where she made one of two shots putting her team up by two, ultimately sealing the 49-47 victory and handing the Vikings a loss to start the season.

With a new head coach in Tony Santisteban leading the way, the Exira-EHK boys basketball team is hoping to build off a successful 2022 campaign finishing 19-15 and making it all the way to the 1A-8 Semifinal Game losing 71-52 to the West Harrison Hawkeyes.
“We’re very excited to get the season going,” said Senior Aiden Flathers. “We’ve been looking forward to it all summer.”

Former HCHS Cyclone and Iowa State Cyclone volleyball standout Jess Schaben has signed to play with Nebraska’s first major league professional volleyball team, the Supernovas.

After a 19-3 season ended in heartbreak for the AHSTW Vikings, where they made an appearance in the Regional Final match losing 47-36 to Des Moines Christian, they are back to work practicing with a lot of new faces.
“We are very excited,” said Viking Head Coach G.G. Harris. “There is a different dynamic this year, and there will be a lot of new faces, learning and having new roles. We welcome the challenge and opportunity.”

After a 17-6 finish in their 2022 campaign that ended with an appearance in the Regional Final Game, the HCHS boys basketball team is back to practice and will have to overcome a challenging non-conference schedule to have a successful season.

The HCHS boys wrestling team is back in action now under new coach Adam Bendorf, replacing John Murtaugh, who retired at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Practices are underway, preparing for a new season set to begin Dec. 2 with a tournament consisting of nine schools hosted by HCHS.

The IKM-Manning girls basketball team struggled during their 2022 campaign, finishing with a 7-16 record, making a first round exit against the East Sac County Raiders in the Class 2A – Region 8 game. But with some new faces on the roster, and a new assistant coach, the Wolves are ready to get back to work.

The AHSTW Vikings girls basketball team is looking to build under new head coach Jason McCall off a 9-15 season where they made it to the Class 2A - Region 8 Second Round Game, eventually losing 51-36 to the Underwood Eagles.
“We’re so excited,” said Senior Delaney Goshorn. “We’ve had a lot of fun so far, a lot of underclassmen or girls who haven’t come out have came out. We’re getting a lot done the first week of practice.”

The Exira-EHK girls basketball team is hoping to build off a successful 19-5 season where they made it all the way to the Regional Championship Game, losing 51-43 to the Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks.
“I am always excited this time of the year,” said Spartan Head Coach Tom Petersen. “I have been doing this a long time, and every year as a head coach, it is a challenge, and this year is no different.”

After a run to the Regional Championship Game where they lost 64-38 to the Des Moines Christian Lions during their 2022 campaign, the HCHS girls basketball team is back to work ready to make another strong run.
