The AHSTW Vikings girls basketball team is looking to build under new head coach Jason McCall off a 9-15 season where they made it to the Class 2A - Region 8 Second Round Game, eventually losing 51-36 to the Underwood Eagles.
“We’re so excited,” said Senior Delaney Goshorn. “We’ve had a lot of fun so far, a lot of underclassmen or girls who haven’t come out have came out. We’re getting a lot done the first week of practice.”

The Exira-EHK girls basketball team is hoping to build off a successful 19-5 season where they made it all the way to the Regional Championship Game, losing 51-43 to the Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks.
“I am always excited this time of the year,” said Spartan Head Coach Tom Petersen. “I have been doing this a long time, and every year as a head coach, it is a challenge, and this year is no different.”

After a run to the Regional Championship Game where they lost 64-38 to the Des Moines Christian Lions during their 2022 campaign, the HCHS girls basketball team is back to work ready to make another strong run.

For the third consecutive year, Junior Cyclone Lindsey Sonderman has won the KMALand Iowa Girls Cross Country Runner of the year. Sonderman also took home the award during her freshman and sophomore season.
“It's an honor to receive this award for the third time,” Sonderman said. “There are so many amazing high school runners that are just as deserving of this award, so it means a lot that they chose me.”

The AHSTW Vikings have hired longtime assistant basketball coach Jason McCall into the top position for the upcoming season.

The Exira-EHK boys basketball team has hired Tony Santisteban as its new coach for the upcoming season.
“The position came open in the spring after Coach [Doug] Newton decided to step away from being the head coach,” Santisteban said. “I always knew I wanted to be a head coach at some point in my life, and this opportunity came up, and I applied and interviewed for the position, and I was able to secure it.

Facing the #1-ranked 3A Creston Panthers at their place was already a tough task, but the HCHS Cyclones found themselves down 21-7 to start the second quarter. But a team that has overcome adversity and injuries roared back to life in the second quarter, tying the game at 21, and for a second it seemed like the Cyclones’ recent run to the state championship game might continue.

The AHSTW Vikings ran into a buzzsaw Friday night on the road in the Underwood Eagles losing 42-0 effectively ending their season in the 1A Second Round Game.

Cyclone Junior Lindsey Sonderman competed strong at Fort Dodge Saturday in the state meet taking a second place finish overall, just 3.5 seconds behind Sophomore Marissa Ferebee of Pella with a time of 18:38.6.
“It was awesome,” said Cyclone Head Coach Zach Klaassen. “She’s a special talent. That’s the highest 5k finisher Harlan has ever had. She’s just a tough, tough girl. She knows what she needs to do and she gets it done.”

Exira-EHK
Spartan Freshman Michelle Wilson ran a time of 21:01.9 Friday afternoon at the state meet, taking a 68th place finish overall.

After a tough 25-22 loss in week five of the regular season in which the game was decided by a field goal, the Cyclones hope to get redemption on the Creston Panthers.

After a dominating first half in which they scored in each quarter and led the Glidden-Ralston Wildcats 22-8, the Exira-EHK Spartans fell flat in the third quarter and then what looked like a victory going away, became a barn burner when the Wildcats scored to open the fourth quarter making it a one score game, 22-16
