Damaging/Stealing political signs a misdemeanor

Residents are reporting this week the theft and/or damage of political signs from their residences/yards. This damage to a Biden/Harris sign happened last night in the area of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Officials said if caught, the thieves/vandals could be charged with fifth-degree theft as well as trespassing or vandalism.

 

Petersen Family Wellness Center Celebrates 10 years

    HARLAN – Deb Leuschen can’t say enough good things about the Petersen Family Wellness Center and Lewis Family Aquatic Complex.    The long-time Shelby County resident credits the Wellness Center with helping her get in shape and rehabilitate an injury during the past few years.  If it hadn’t been here, she’d still be traveling extra miles to a near-by pool for exercise.

HOMECOMING ROYALTY

    HARLAN -- Congratulations to the 2020 Harlan Community Homecoming King and Queen, Trey Gross and Kennedy Kjergaard.  The royalty was crowned during coronation ceremonies Friday, Sept. 18, and presided over the HCHS vs. Denison-Schleswig football game that night.

USDA designates Iowa counties as disaster areas; eligible for loans

    REGIONAL -- Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has designated 10 Iowa counties as primary natural disaster areas.    Producers in Buena Vista, Hamilton, Harrison, Ida, Madison, Monona, Pocahontas, Polk, Pottawattamie and Story counties who suffered losses caused recent drought may be eligible for U.S.

Spirit week western day for homecoming

    HARLAN -- Students last week were excited to participate in a series of dress-up days for homecoming week.    Wednesday was Wild West Wednesday, where students K-12 could dress up in their favorite western garb.
 

WONDERING ABOUT HALLOWEEN? TRICK-OR-TREATING?

City officials say "as of now," trick-or-treating is on in Harlan October 31. More details coming at the October 6 city council meeting.

 

We'll have trick-or-treating information from all Shelby County towns closer to October 31.

     REGIONAL – The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department assisted the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office in a vehicle pursuit yesterday.

Free meals now provided to all HCS students

    HARLAN -- Students in the Harlan Community Schools will be given free breakfast and lunch as part of a USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) meal program that has been extended through the end of the year.    HCS officials announced this week that starting on Monday, Sept.

Cyclones celebrate Homecoming with 35-0 win

   HARLAN (Sept. 18) -- Harlan Community scored three TDs in the final 12:40 Friday to pull away from Denison-Schleswig, 35-0, on Homecoming night at Merrill Field.
  Joey Moser caught two TD passes from Teagon Kasperbauer, including a 59-yard connection on the second play from scrimmage. HCHS outgained the Monarchs 415-111 in total yardage, improving to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Class 3A, District 9.

IKM-Manning homecoming theme Quarantine 2020

    MANNING – IKM-Manning hosts homecoming activities this week under the theme Quarantine 2020, with a number of changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic specifically to the community pep rally and parade.    The pep rally and coronation will be outdoors at Forman Field today, Friday, Sept. 18 beginning at 1:45 p.m.

School patrons ask board to ease restrictions

    HARLAN – EJ Leinen formally requested Monday, Sept. 14 that the Harlan Community School Board and administration reconsider homecoming week cancellations, including hopes that the coronation set for today, Friday, Sept.
