Slight HMU revenue decline due to COVID-19

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Municipal Utilities has accepted and filed the annual audit report recently received from Gronewold, Bell, Kyhnn & Co. P.C. CPAs. A copy of the audit report will soon be available for review in the office of the Auditor of State and the utility office.    The 2019-2020 financials show operating revenues decreased 2.91%, or $427,634 from fiscal year 2019 to fiscal 2020.

    EXIRA -- Queen Tatum Grubbs, King Brent Asberry and Queen Camryn Paulsen were recognized as homecoming royalty at Exira/EHK Friday evening, Oct. 2.

Exira-EHK School, Community Honor Bruns

    EXIRA -- A moment of silence and balloon release in memory of Rochelle Bruns, elementary principal at Exira-EHK, was held at the end of the first quarter of the homecoming football game in Exira Friday night, Oct. 2. Rochelle died on Thursday, Oct. 1. Many of those in attendance wore purple clothing as purple was her favorite color.

Teal Out fundraiser for cancer research

    HARLAN -- The annual Teal Out event at Harlan Community High School last week raised funds for Colleen’s Dream Foundation and Ovarian Cancer research.    Jenna Hucka and her daughter Priya Nadine, 7, manned a booth at the high school volleyball game providing information and receiving free-will donations.    This year’s teal out was definitely more focused on education about the symptoms of ovarian cancer.

LaVonne Schulte treasures family, friendships

    WESTPHALIA --  The Schulte home in Westphalia is festively decorated for the season as this is LaVonne Schulte’s favorite time of year.    “Fall is my favorite season with all the beautiful colors and pumpkins galore,” said LaVonne.        Fifty-one years ago LaVonne moved to Westphalia when she married her high school sweetheart, Terry Schulte.

HMU CEO Weber gets contract extension, raise

    HARLAN -- Harlan Municipal Utilities CEO Ken Weber has been offered a three-year contract extension as well as a 2.1 percent raise in the first year of the extension.    The HMU Board of Trustees unanimously approved the contract after a closed session meeting Thursday, Sept. 24.    The contract has been extended for another three years ending September 30, 2023.
