E/EHK Homecoming “Rock the Rockets”

    ELK HORN – The Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton students, staff and community will celebrate homecoming this week with a number of activities including dress-up days, the homecoming coronation and pep rally.    This year’s theme is Rock the Rockets, and the week will culminate with the Friday, Oct. 2 football contest at 7 p.m. against ArWeVa.

Whannell enjoyed volunteering on county fair board

    HARLAN -- Harlanite Rex Whannell has been a member of the Shelby County Fair Board for more than 30 years. He said this year was a very different kind of fair due to the COVID-19 pandemic.    “Lots of changes. We didn’t have the big tent and we cut way back on things. Things were so different at the fair but I am really glad they tried to have the fair,” said Whannell.    He “officially” retired from the fair board this year.

7th Street bridge project hearing set

    HARLAN --  The Harlan City Council is moving forward with a bridge project along 7th St. in north Harlan with hopes of having the project begin in early 2021.    A public hearing will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6 on the 7th Street bridge project.  The council on September 15 adopted the plans, specifications, form of contract and estimate of costs of the bridge work.
 

Cyclones get to 5-0 with 28-14 win at Carroll

   CARROLL (Sept. 25) -- Connor Frame threw a 55-yard TD pass to Aidan Hall on a reverse-pass play just before halftime and opened the third quarter with a 59-yard TD reception from Teagon Kasperbauer to highlight Harlan Community's 28-14 win over the Carroll Tigers Friday night.

Tater pickin’ at Carstens Farmstead

    SHELBY — More than 400 pounds of potatoes were planted last spring at the Carstens Farmstead near Shelby. People gathered and helped dig and pick up the potatoes on Saturday. One and a half ton of potatoes were harvested for a free will donation. Organizers said there was a great turnout for the event. Due to COVID-19 the Annual Carstens Farm Days was cancelled this fall.

Myrtue discusses signs, risks for suicide prevention

    HARLAN -- September is National Suicide Prevention and Awareness month and Myrtue Medical Center’s Senior Life Solutions and Behavioral Health are working to raise awareness and educate the community on the risk factors and warning signs of suicide.    Talk of suicide should never be dismissed, officials say. If you, or someone you know, are thinking of suicide call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

HCS, Board of Health workshop planned

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Community Schools Board of Education was scheduled to meet with the Shelby County Board of Health Thursday evening, Sept. 24.    The workshop began at 7 p.m. at the C.G. Therkildsen Center in Harlan.    The move comes after discussion at the HCS Board meeting Monday, Sept.

Tiny Lund Memorial Races get under way this weekend

    HARLAN -- The 28th-annual Tiny Lund Memorial Races will be held Friday-Saturday, Sept. 25-26 at the Shelby County Speedway in Harlan.    A fun-filled family weekend of racing is planned.    Gates open at 3:28 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 for the Dale Swanson Memorial Race with a pit meeting at 6:28 p.m. and hot laps/racing to follow.
