Bernice Petersen will turn 90

ANKENY — Bernice Petersen, formerly from Harlan, will be celebrating her 90th birthday on December 7. To celebrate this incredible milestone, her family is  planning a card shower. 
Bernice and her late husband, Laverne (Bud) Petersen lived in Harlan for more than 60 years before moving to Johnston three years ago. Bernice moved to Ankeny earlier this year. 

Card shower planned for Donna Campbell’s 90th birthday

IRWIN— Donna Campbell will celebrate her 90th birthday November 25.

Donna retired from Shelby Co. State Bank. Her family includes husband, Norman Campbell; children Terry (Roxann) Campbell, Renae (Richard) Wiig, and Wanda (Phil Masters) Kasperbauer; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Grotes will celebrate 50th anniversary

EARLING — Dan and Shirley Grote will mark their 50th wedding anniversary on November 8. The couple married November 8, 1975, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling.The Grote’s are the parents of four children: Kevin Grote (Jennifer) of Clive, IA; Diane Thies (Mike) of Omaha, NE; Greg Grote (Courtney) of Dallas Center, IA; and Brian Grote (Jaurel) of Earling, IA. They have also been blessed with eight grandchildren.

Betty Andersen will turn 100

Card shower planned for Julie Wiig’s 80th birthday

KIRKMAN — Julienne (Julie) Wiig will celebrate her 80th birthday November 4, 2025.Please join in to celebrate this milestone with a card shower. She also had her own business, Julie’s Cottage of Flowers, but now has decided to be kick back and enjoy her retirement. 

Portsmouth Knights of Columbus donate funds from Tootsie Roll drive

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Knights of Columbus Council #12193 recently held its annual Tootsie Roll drive. Funds were raised September 27 at Fareway and Hy-Vee in Harlan and September 28 at St. Mary’s Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth. The KofC thank everyone who donated.Proceeds were divided between Harlan Community Special Olympics and Concerned, Inc.

Class of 57 reunites

Throlson and Shiffer announce engagement

 WOODBINE—  Emily Throlson and Michael Shiffer, both of Woodbine, announce their engagement. Emily’s parents are Tom Throlson and Amy Hursey of Shelby and Ryan and Trista McLaughlin of Missouri Valley. Michael is the son of the late Samantha Shiffer and Mark and Nichole Smith of Avoca. Emily graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 2021 and is a bank teller at BMO Harris Bank.

Gessert and Bridgewater exchange vows

 HARLAN ­— Justice Gessert and Dustin Bridgewater of Des Moines were wed October 28, 2023 at St. Michael’s Church in Harlan. Father Clement Owusu officiated. Justice is the daughter of Shawn and Renée Gessert of Harlan. Dustin’s parents are Debra and Alan Shriver of Jefferson and Rebecca and Larry Bridgewater of Texas. Jennifer Brooker of Des Moines was maid of honor.

Open house will celebrate Addie Maxwell’s 100th birthday

 HARLAN ­— Addie Maxwell will celebrate her 100th birthday November 17. An open house will be held November 18 from 2 -4 in the McKee Room of the Elm Crest Retirement Community. Greetings may be sent to her at 2104 12th St., Room 251, Harlan, IA 51537. Addie was born in 1923 to Chris and Olga Knudsen of Jacksonville. She married Art Maxwell November 19, 1943.

Doran and Reinert wed in August ceremony

URBANDALE — Katelynn Doran and Adam Reinert, both of Urbandale, exchanged vows at St. Augustin Catholic Church in Des Moines Saturday, August 13, 2022. Rev. Pat Davitt officiated the double ring ceremony. Parents of the bride are Randall and Ann Doran of Harlan. The groom’s parents are Tim and Lisa Reinert of Glenwood. The bride was escorted down the aisle by her father.

Reep graduates from U.S. Marine Corps Boot Camp

 HARLAN — Private Luke Reep, 20, of Harlan, graduated from the United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego on February 3, 2023. Private Reep successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD San Diego as one of 40 recruits in Training Platoon 2107. While in recruit training, Private Reep achieved rifle expert.

Open house planned for Barton’s 90th birthday

 HARLAN — Margie Barton will celebrate her 90th birthday March 19. Her family is hosting an open house Saturday, March 25 from 2 - 4 p.m. at Altamont Baptist Church, 516 Quince Rd., Harlan. Family and friends are invited to join the celebration. Margie was married to the late Bob Barton.
