Junior Sainte Ella Klusman scored two goals in the second half of Tuesday’s soccer match at Merrill Field against the Cyclones, effectively ending their season.
“We’ve had a lot of successes this year,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jared Boysen. “There’s a lot of things to be thankful for. The effort was there and we knew it was going to be a battle. We knew it was pretty even both ways. I’m proud of how we played.”

Nine Cyclones represented Harlan Community High School at the track and field state championships at Drake Stadium over a 3-day spread, which included the boys taking home a third place trophy and multiple Cyclones bringing home individual medals.

With five and a half minutes remaining in overtime, Sophomore Cyclone Aubrey Schwieso knocked in the game winning goal past Freshman Treynor goalkeeper Zoey Zadalis securing a 2-1 win, punching their ticket to the Class 1A – Region 5 game against St. Albert Tuesday at Merrill Field.

Monday, the HCHS girls golf team competed against the Trojans at Atlantic’s Nishna Hills Golf Club and lost by four strokes, 189-193.
“I thought we played tough in real adverse weather conditions,” said Cyclones Head Coach Todd Bladt. “The girls had to battle the weather and battle a tough Atlantic team. They’re a state level contention team and we almost got them on their home course in tough conditions.”

The HCHS boys baseball team opened their season at home Monday night against the Sioux City North Stars, dropping both games of a doubleheader 9-0 and 10-8.
“It was a little bit of a disappointing effort,” said Cyclones Head Coach Heath Stein. “In all aspects of the game, we didn’t throw the ball very well. We gave a lot of free bases on the mound and defensively, we gave them more free bases.”

Cyclone Sophomore Aubrey Schwieso made history Monday night at Merrill Field, scoring her 28th goal of the season, setting a new single season record in Cyclone soccer history.
“It’s really awesome, but credit to my teammates,” Schwieso said. “It feels pretty good, but it’s all because of them.”

Less than five minutes into Monday’s 2A-8 First Round Tournament Game, Junior Cyclone Elmer Argueta knocked in the first goal of the game en route to a 7-0 victory over the Atlantic Trojans.
Argueta scored four goals, Ian Shelton had two and Nolan Schwery had one on a headbutt.

Sophomore Lindsey Sonderman was the lone Cyclone who punched her ticket for the state championship meet in Des Moines after competing with the HCHS girls track and field team at the State Qualifying Meet at Carroll Athletic Stadium.

The HCHS baseball team is preparing for a new season set to get underway May 15 at home against the Sioux City North Stars and Cyclones Head Coach Heath Stein said he’s excited.
“I believe we got 10 spring league games in to try and prepare for the upcoming season,” he said. “Guys have been great, work ethic has been great, attitudes are great and we’re just ready to roll.”

Senior Ella Plagman said she’s excited to be a leader on the HCHS softball team when it begins its new season May 22 at home against the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs.
“I'm super excited to get the season going,” said Senior Ella Plagman. “We're going to have a pretty young team this year, so it'll be fun to build a bond with all the girls. I'm excited to see what aspects everyone is going to bring to the team.”

Thursday, the HCHS girls varsity soccer team went on the road to battle the West Central Valley Wildcats, winning on a penalty kick shootout 2-1, for their second consecutive victory and fourth in the last five games.

Wednesday at the Fox Run Golf Course in Council Bluffs, the HCHS boys varsity golf team competed in the 3A Sectional against seven other schools, placing 6th with 349 stroke, 22 behind the winner Winterset.

Monday night at home, the HCHS boys varsity soccer team ran into a buzz saw facing the 10-5 Lewis Central Titans, dropping the game 8-1.
“Lewis Central has got a lot of speed and very good ball skill,” said Cyclones Head Coach Dave Voge. “Most of those guys play together on club teams all year round and you can tell by that.”
Junior Titan Brayden Shepard got the Titans on the board first with a goal 23 seconds into the game.

The Lewis Central Titans came to Merrill Field Monday night against the HCHS girls varsity soccer team and defeated them 3-1, with two goals coming from Senior Gracie Hays.
“We knew they were tough up front,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jared Boysen. “They have three or four girls that scored quite a few goals, so we knew we needed to stay in front and we played more defense and didn’t have as many offensive opportunities.”

Cyclone Senior Mason Anderson recently signed a Letter of Intent to play soccer at Northwestern College in Orange City following the conclusion of his high school career.
“I am very happy to be able to play soccer at a collegiate level,” Anderson said.
Anderson talked about what made him choose Northwestern where he will be majoring in business management.
