HCHS staves off Titan fourth-quarter rally

 HARLAN (Dec. 15) -- Knocking down six straight free throws in the final minute, the Harlan Community boys basketball team held off Lewis Central’s fourth-quarter rally and stayed unbeaten Friday night with a 52-49 win over the Titans. Playing most of the game without second-leading scorer Brett Sears, who sprained an ankle in the first quarter, the 7th-ranked (3A) Cyclones still managed to build a 37-24 lead going to the fourth.

 ELK HORN -- The CAM boys basketball team built a 17-9 lead after one quarter and outlasted Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton 57-53 in Rolling Valley Conference action Friday night. Thomas  and Nate Hensley led the Cougars with 18 and 11 points, respectively, while Nick Holste added nine points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, four assists and three steals.

HCHS boys roll past Lynx for season’s first dual win

 HARLAN (Dec. 12) -- Games of 200-plus from Devin Wilson and Keaton Jones led the Harlan Community boys bowling team to its first dual win of the season Tuesday at Cyclone Lanes. The Cyclones defeated the Lynx by 238 total pins - 2,655 to 2,417 - and improved to 1-1 on the year. The HCHS girls, meanwhile, dropped to 0-2 following a loss of 2,159 to 1,792. The top individual scores of the day were turned in by Wilson and Jones.

AHSTW boys top Eagles

 UNDERWOOD (Dec. 12) -- Jake Martin led AHSTW with 22 points, six assists and three steals Tuesday night as the Viking boys basketball team picked up an impressive 63-50 road win at Underwood. A strong second quarter (19-11) keyed the Vikings’ third straight victory as they improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the Western Iowa Conference.

Eagles knock Lady Vikes to 1-5

 UNDERWOOD (Dec. 12) -- One bad quarter proved costly for the AHSTW girls basketball team in Tuesday night’s 57-40 loss at Underwood. The Lady Vikes were outscored 13-1 in the second quarter but were otherwise competitive throughout the game. Morgan Eckmann made 6-of-7 field goals on the night and led AHSTW with 14 points. Claire Denning had seven points while Kinsey Scheffler (9 rebounds) and Sarah Butcher both scored six.

HCHS wrestlers finish eighth at Boys Town

 BOYS TOWN, NEB. -- Five out of 11 Harlan Community wrestlers placed in the top five at the 47th annual Boys Town Invitational Friday and Saturday, leading the Cyclones to eighth place out of 15 teams. Blair won the tournament with 195.5 points, followed by Schuyler with 169.5 and Wahoo with 154.
