Ten area gridders named Academic All-State

 DES MOINES – Eight Harlan Community seniors were recently recognized for being named to the Class 3A Iowa Football Coaches Association (IFCA) Academic All-State Team. Two seniors from AHSTW were also honored on the Class 1A team. Seniors from HCHS receiving the honor for 2017 include: Jacob Bartley, Caleb Brouse, Tyler Buman, Patrick Fah, Nick Foss, Dave Hoffmann, Will Hoffmann and CJ Schechinger.

Cyclones survive Kearney Catholic at Nebraska Prep Classic

 OMAHA, NEB. (Jan. 20) -- Shane Chamberlain (21) and Logan Klaassen (19) combined for 40 points last Saturday as the Harlan Community boys basketball team fought off a tough challenge to defeat Kearney Catholic 54-45 in the Nebraska Prep Classic at Ralston Arena. Klaassen knocked down three 3-pointers in the third quarter, including two in the final minute that gave HCHS a 41-32 advantage.

 ELK HORN (Jan. 19) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton boys basketball team put up 57 points in the first half alone Friday night, crushing West Harrison 94-42 for its sixth straight win and improving to 9-5 overall and 7-5 in the Rolling Valley Conference. Josh Pettepier knocked down 6-of-9 three-pointers for the Spartans and led the way with 28 points. Cole Burmeister also had a big night, totaling 16 points and 14 assists.

Cyclones sweep Kuemper quad, Vikings finish 2-1

 CARROLL (Jan. 18) -- Compared to its previous meet five days earlier, good fortune was on Harlan Community’s side here Thursday night as the Cyclone wrestlers went 3-0 in a quadrangular against Red Oak, Kuemper Catholic and AHSTW. HCHS started the night with a 34-33 win over Red Oak when Oscar Olmos came through with a 14-4 major decision in the final match at 145 pounds.

 OMAHA, NEB. (Jan. 20) -- The Harlan Community boys and girls basketball teams will participate in Saturday’s Nebraska Prep Classic at the Ralston Arena in Omaha. The Cyclone boys will face Kearney Catholic (2-13 overall) at 1:00 p.m., followed by the Cyclone girls vs. Gretna (9-3) at 2:30. Eight total games will be played on the day (six boys, two girls), starting with the St. Albert boys vs. Elkhorn at 10:00 a.m.
