ELK HORN (Dec. 1) -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton outscored Coon Rapids-Bayard 25-11 in the second quarter Friday night en route to a season-opening 66-51 home win over the Crusaders. Junior guard Cole Burmeister had a huge game for the Spartans, totaling 26 points, seven assists and five rebounds while shooting 8-of-13 from the field.

 AVOCA (Dec. 1) -- AHSTW outscored IKM-Manning 21-9 in the fourth quarter to outlast the Wolves 58-48 in a Western Iowa Conference boys basketball game Friday night. Both teams are now 1-1 in the WIC. Jack Paulson and Kevin Jorgensen led AHSTW with 15 and 14 points, respectively, and Paulson also grabbed 10 boards. Blake Osbahr added nine points for the Vikings. IKM-Manning was led by Jared Johnson’s 23 points and Alex Lingle’s 10.

 TREYNOR (Nov. 28) -- One bad quarter proved costly for the AHSTW boys basketball team Tuesday night as the Vikings lost their season opener at Treynor 61-55. The second quarter was the difference in the game as Treynor outscored the Vikings 15-4 to take a 25-17 halftime advantage. R.J. Harris led AHSTW with 20 points in defeat, followed by Dalton Fischer with 12 points, Jake Martin 10, Kevin Jorgensen seven and Jack Paulson 4.

 CARROLL -- Former Red Oak and Harlan Community coach Angie Spangenberg was inducted into the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Carroll High School. This year’s Hall of Fame ceremony was held during the annual IGCA Senior All-Star Weekend.

 CRESTON (Nov. 24) -- Racing out to a 33-9 lead, the Harlan Community boys basketball team defeated Chariton 56-35 in one half of play Friday night at the Southwestern Community College jamboree in Creston. Senior Shane Chamberlain led HCHS with 21 points and made five of the team’s nine 3-pointers.

 DES MOINES -- An outstanding senior season and career produced a big honor for Harlan Community’s Nick Foss this week as the Cyclone tailback and safety was named captain of the Class 3A All-State Football team by the Iowa Newspaper Association. Foss was one of seven area players honored Tuesday by the INA, which selected three all-state teams per class and named six senior captains. Joining Foss on the Class 3A First Team was HCHS senior Cal

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Six Harlan Community High School students competed in the Special Olympics State Bowling competition held last Saturday (November 18) at Thunderbowl in Council Bluffs. Each Cyclone bowler participated in a singles event for their age group, placing between first and fourth.

(Nov. 18) -- Former Harlan Community star Jess Schaben surpassed 1,000 career kills at the collegiate level on Saturday night, leading the 23rd-ranked Iowa State volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of TCU (25-19, 25-16, 25-14) for the Cyclones’ 20th win of the season. Schaben, the daughter of Bryce and Carrie Schaben, rural Defiance, finished the match with a team-high 12 kills to go with seven digs.
