Jeff Schmitz speaks at tax public hearing

    HARLAN - Harlan agri-businessman Jeff Schmitz spent seven minutes voicing his concerns about the lack of accountability and leadership at Myrtue Medical Center by its administration and board of trustees during a tax levy public hearing here on Tuesday, Feb.

Myrtue CEO Jacobsen surprised by comments; offers rebuttal

    HARLAN – Myrtue Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Barry Jacobsen said Wednesday he was surprised by the comments of a Harlan resident at Tuesday’s medical center budget hearing critical of the hospital’s overall financial picture, decision-making and direction.    Especially since he, nor any board member or chief financial officer Kristi Hansen, had been contacted before Tuesday to voice such concerns.

HARLAN – The Shelby County Historical Society and Beauty N the Beast were award winners at the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s annual awards banquet held last Friday in Harlan.    The Historical Society was honored as non-profit of the year, while Beauty N the Beast was honored as business of the year and new business of the year.    The two joined Stan Jens, who was named citizen of the year, as award recipients at the event,

    WALNUT -- Larry L. Kay, 76, Walnut, died February 22 at his home.    Services will be held Friday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut with burial in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Walnut.  Family greeted friends Thursday, Feb. 25 from 5-7 p.m.

Ronnie Rapp, 76

    OAKLAND -- Ronnie Lee Rapp, 76, Oakland, died February 20 at Oakland Manor Nursing Home.    Services will be held Monday, Feb. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca with burial in the Graceland Cemetery at Avoca.  Family will greet friends Monday from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Jacob Hartvigsen, 21

    AUDUBON -- Jacob Hartvigsen, 21, Audubon, died February 20 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.    Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton with burial in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at Kimballton.    Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 26 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m.

Weddings - Terri and Michael Weis

    GILBERTVILLE,  IA -- Terri Oltrogge of Des Moines and Michael Weis of Ankeny were married at Immaculate Conception Church in Gilbertville on November 14, 2015. Father Huber performed the 1 p.m. double ring ceremony.    Terri is the daughter of Phil Oltrogge, Waterloo; and Carol Jordan, Gilbertville. Michael is the son of Bob and Donna Weis, Harlan. 

Weddings - Mark and Kristah Nelson

RURAL SHELBY -- Kristah Lynn Carlson and Mark Thomas Nelson both of Omaha exchanged marriage vows on September 6, 2015 at the Willow Creek Glass Chapel near Shelby. The 3 p.m. double ring ceremony was performed by Pastor Phillip Nielsen of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan.    Parents of the couple are Michael Carlson, Orlando, FL; Teresa Carlson, Omaha; and Verne and Ilene Nelson, Harlan. 

ENGAGEMENTS - Mary Vorrath and Ole Kolsrud

    SKEIN, NORWAY -- Mary Elizabeth Vorrath and Ole Martin Kolsrud both of Bergan, Norway will exchange marriage vows on May 14 in a ceremony in Skein, Norway.    Mary is the daughter of Jill and Ron Davis, Harlan; and Doug and Margarita Vorrath, Denison. She is also the granddaughter of Loren and Jeanette Ferry, Manilla.
