HCHS girls host Heelan Saturday

 HARLAN -- The pairings are officially set for Harlan Community to make another run at the Girls State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines. Bishop Heelan’s 66-40 win over Denison-Schleswig Wednesday night moves the Crusaders (12-10) into Saturday night’s Class 4-A, Region 1 semifinal at 3rd-ranked HCHS (18-2) in Harlan.

Jacob Hartvigsen, 21

Birthday Milestones - Hazel Muller

    HARLAN -- Hazel Muller of Harlan will celebrate her 90th birthday on February 27. A card shower in her honor is being requested by her family. Cards will reach her if mailed to 1407 Country Club Drive, Harlan, IA 51537.    Hazel has three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jo and Rick, Linda and Bruce, and Judy and Bryan. She also has two grandchildren.

DES MOINES -- Marisa Glyn Swoboda and Todd Joseph Theulen both of Des Moines exchanged marriage vows on October 24, 2015 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines. Forgivable loan okayed for Alzheimer’s unit

    HARLAN --  The City of Harlan has signed off on an agreement that will provide forgivable loan dollars to the developer of a memory care unit to serve the community.    The council Tuesday approved a resolution that provides the loan and land to Hansen House, LLC in exchange for the creation of 14.5 new full-time-equivalent jobs to be in place by June 1, 2019.    The jobs will have to be maintained through June 1, 2022.    Harlan will prov

Library director Burris resigns effective April 1

    HARLAN – Harlan Library Director Michael Burris has submitted his resignation effective April 1.    Burris announced February 8 that he has accepted the executive director position at the Lincoln County Library System in Kamrar, WY.  He has been the director of the Harlan Library for eight years, and said the move is a good professional opportunity for him.

State Wrestling meet starts Thursday for six area qualifiers

 DES MOINES -- Six area wrestlers will begin competition Thursday at the 2016 State Wrestling Tournament inside Wells Fargo Arena. The state meet will continue Friday and Saturday and conclude with the championship finals on Saturday night. This year’s local qualifiers include three from AHSTW, two from Harlan Community and one from Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton.

Cyclones’ Shaeffer, Wingert earn state bids
