Marge Hemminger, 72

    HARLAN -- Marge Helen Hemminger, 72, Harlan, died March 26 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.    Services will be held Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Family will greet friends Friday, April 1 from 6-8 p.m.

Gabriel Brown, 32

    HARTFORD -- Gabriel Richard Brown, 32, Hartford, died March 25 in Des Moines.    Services were held Thursday, March 31 at 11 a.m.

Ruth Arrick, 84

    COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Ruth L. Arrick, 84, Council Bluffs, formerly of Persia, died March 25 at Northcrest Living Center.    Services were held Thursday, March 31 at 1 p.m.

Warren Becker, 79

    HARLAN -- Warren A. Becker, 79, Harlan, died March 27 at his home.    Services were held Thursday, March 31 at 11 a.m. at St.

Harlan FFA heads to state leadership event

HARLAN -- Harlan FFA members competed at Sub-district FFA Contests on February 24 and Southwest Iowa District FFA Convention on Saturday, March 5. Forty-five Harlan FFA members now look to participate in various State FFA Leadership Events in Ames, April 19-21.    Iowa FFA Degree Candidates:    The Harlan FFA Chapter is excited that seven members have cleared the first hurdle in an effort to earn their Iowa FFA Degree.

Myrtue financial picture improving; Hjelle praises administration

    HARLAN – Hospital revenues continue to improve at Myrtue Medical Center as they realized a decrease in its operating losses year to date, hospital officials reported this month.    The hospital’s financials showed a $293,953 gain in net income from all sources, such as tax support, donations, rental income and investment income. When removing those additional income items, the hospital ended the month with a loss of -$292,675.

Community input welcomed on calendar

HARLAN – Harlan Community Schools Superintendent Justin Wagner has stepped back from comments he made earlier this month regarding  next year’s school calendar being unanimously approved by a calendar committee, keeping the door open for more feedback from school district patrons, staff, administration and calendar committee members.    Persons with thoughts on next year’s calendar are encouraged to contact Wagner at the superintendent’s offic

Audio of 911 baby delivery call released

    REGIONAL – “I’m on the Elk Horn ramp.  My wife is getting ready to have a kid.  I need help.”    That plea was from Chris Bengel early Tuesday morning, March 29, as it became apparent that his wife, Erica, would likely not make it to the hospital in Council Bluffs, and that their third child could be delivered in their truck along Interstate 80.    The couple got five minutes out of Atlantic when Erica’s contractions became more intense. 

Colin Luth, 39

    HANCOCK -- Colin Tyson Luth, 39, Hancock, died March 25 at his home.    Services will be held Wednesday, March 30 at 2 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca with burial at a later date.  Family will greet friends Tuesday, March 29 from 6-8 p.m.
