Color Run for the Cure is April 16

 HARLAN -- Registration is open until March 24 for the third annual Color Run for the Cure, a 5K run/walk scheduled for Saturday, April 16, at the Harlan Fairgrounds. The Relay for Life team event will start at 10:00 a.m., with check-in opening at 9 o’clock that morning.

Vollstedt selected as Wolves “Fan of the Game”

 DES MOINES -- Janell Vollstedt of Manilla was honored prior to IKM-Manning’s Class 1-A quarterfinal at the Boys State Basketball Tournament as the school’s Iowa High School Athletic Association “Fan of the Game.” Vollstedt, pictured with Brett Nanninga (Associate Director of the IHSAA), received a commemorative game ball and was recognized at center court prior to IKM-Manning’s game.

St. Boniface wins CYO girls basketball title

AREA -- St. Boniface of Westphalia won the 2016 CYO Girls Basketball Tournament championship by defeating Panama in the title game on Sunday, February 28. The St. Boniface girls closed the season with a record of 7-2 with both losses against Panama during the regular season.

Local wrestlers compete at AAU State

 DES MOINES -- Five individuals from the Harlan Community Wrestling Club qualified and competed at the 2016 AAU State Tournament held February 27-28 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Sixth-grader Jeremiah Davis was the lone place-winner among the group, placing eighth with a 3-3 record in his division. 

Home, Garden & Living Show March 19-20 in Harlan

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Newspapers’ Annual Home, Garden & Living Show is set for Saturday and Sunday, March 19-20 in Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Harlan.    Approximately 2,000 people attend the free event each year, which runs 4:30-8 p.m. Saturday and noon-4 p.m. Sunday.    This year’s show will feature 34 businesses and organizations.

Marjorie Maupin, 84

    HARLAN -- Marjorie Edna Maupin, 84, Harlan, died March 15 at her home.    Services will be held Monday, March 21 at 11 a.m. at Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday, March 20 from 3-9 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.  Family will greet friends Monday from 9-11 a.m.

Bernadine Gaer, 99

    HARLAN -- Bernadine Gaer, 99, Harlan, died March 15 at Elm Crest Retirement Community.    Services will be held Monday, March 21 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Harlan, with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation is Sunday, March 20 from 5-7 p.m.

Ellen Christensen, 94

    SAN RAFAEL, CA -- Ellen Eric Christensen (Mrs.Ivan Christensen), 94, died March 12 in San Rafael, CA.    Christensen is a former Walnut resident.    She is survived by children Linda in Virginia, Eric in California, and stepchildren Sara in Illinois, Clark in California and David in South Carolina.    Christensen will be interred in the Walnut Cemetery at a later date.
