CLARINDA -- Harlan Community scored 69 points and placed fifth out of eight teams in the Class 3-A division of Friday’s Clarinda Boys Cardinal Relays. The top four finishers were Lewis Central (153 points), Glenwood (124), Atlantic (86) and Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson (76). Shenandoah won the Class 2-A team title and Nishnabotna prevailed in Class 1-A.
DUNLAP -- The IKM-Manning track teams combined to win five gold medals and both placed fifth overall at Friday’s Denison-Schleswig Co-Ed Meet held in Dunlap. The Monarchs handily won both team titles on the night with the Logan-Magnolia girls and Treynor boys each placing second. The IKM-Manning girls placed fifth with 73 points and the boys were fifth with 58 points.
HARLAN -- In a way, the 2016 girls soccer season began just like last year for Harlan Community - with a two-goal victory over Creston. The next step for Coach Jared Boysen’s squad will be building on Tuesday’s 5-3 win at Merrill Field and improving on last year’s disappointing 5-13 overall record. HARLAN -- The Harlan Community boys tennis team won its second meet in as many days here Tuesday, dominating Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, 9-0, to improve to 2-1 on the year. Adjusting to a strong south wind, the Cyclones won five matches handily and also picked up hard-fought 9-7 wins by Alec Plagman at number-two singles and Isaac Stitz and Plagman at number-one doubles. GLENWOOD -- Harlan Community senior Marcus Klein earned gold medals in the long jump and 100-meter dash Monday night, setting a personal best in both events to highlight the Cyclones’ third-place finish at the Glenwood Ram Relays. Klein was the only athlete to win two individual events at the meet, leaping 20 feet, 4.25 inches in the long jump and clocking a time of 11.37 seconds in the 100.
COUNCIL BLUFFS -- The Harlan Community boys soccer team improved to 3-0 overall Monday night with its third one-goal victory of the young season, winning 2-1 at Lewis Central in both squads’ Hawkeye Ten opener. The Cyclones had previously won a pair of 1-0 decisions vs.
AUDUBON -- AHSTW placed in 10 events, led by a pair of second-place hurdles finishes from Jaycie Schueman, at Monday’s 12-team Audubon Wheeler Girls Early Bird track meet.
MAPLETON -- The IKM-Manning girls track team scored 91 points and placed third at Tuesday’s Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto Co-Ed Invite. Denison-Schleswig won the girls half of the meet with 205 points, followed by MV-AO (118), IKM-M (91) and Charter Oak-Ute (75).
HARLAN – The Shelby County Community Kids Fest will be held at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in Harlan Saturday, April 16 from 9-11:30 a.m. Kids Fest is a community health and safety fair for children ages preschool through 5th grade and their families. The event will be filled with entertainment and interactive activities for children, providing education and awareness of health and safety issues.
