Peters named top FFA student

    HARLAN -- Logan Peters, a senior at Harlan Community High School, was recently presented the school’s highest agricultural honor, the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award. 

Downtown Harlan blocked off for Relay for Life

    HARLAN -- The Harlan City Council has approved a request to block off streets and close a downtown parking lot for the Annual Shelby County Relay For Life event on Friday, June 3.    The council unanimously approved the request to close 6th, 7th, Market and Court Streets which border the Shelby County Courthouse from 2-11 p.m. on June 3 and to allow the use of the 6th and Durant Street parking lot for survivor parking.

Birthday Milestones - Marjorie Chambers

    HAMLIN -- Former Harlan resident Marjorie Chambers will celebrate her 90th birthday on April 14. Her family is planning a card shower in her honor. Cards will reach her if sent to 2353 237th Lane, Hamlin, IA 50117. Marjorie has been a farmer, farmer’s wife and travel agent.    Her family includes Ron and Paulette, Tom and Candy, Jim and Ann, and 14 grandchildren.

AHSTW sweeps home triangular

 AVOCA -- The AHSTW girls and boys golf teams both finished 2-0 in a season-opening home triangular meet Tuesday, beating Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton and Adair-Casey at the Avoca Golf Course. The Lady Vikes scored a 233, led by medalist Hannah Denning’s round of 52 and runner-up medalist Taylor Madden’s 56. Exira-EHK finished with a 266, paced by Katie Kunik’s 57, while Adair-Casey only had two golfers.

HCHS competes at Glenwood JV meet

 GLENWOOD -- Harlan Community placed in 10 girls events and six boys events at the Glenwood 9-10 Co-Ed Ram Relays on Saturday. The Cyclone girls placed seventh in the JV meet with 49 points and the boys placed eighth with 33 points, although neither squad competed in all the events.

Cyclone track squads win nine golds in opener

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community girls and boys track teams combined for nine gold-medal events, but neither was able to secure a team title as the host of Tuesday’s Denison-Schleswig Monarch Co-Ed Relays at Merrill Field. The first outdoor meet of the season, featuring the six “north division” schools of the Hawkeye Ten Conference, was held in Harlan due to the football field renovations taking place in Denison. The Monarchs outscored HCHS 133
