GLENWOOD -- Harlan Community senior Marcus Klein earned gold medals in the long jump and 100-meter dash Monday night, setting a personal best in both events to highlight the Cyclones’ third-place finish at the Glenwood Ram Relays. Klein was the only athlete to win two individual events at the meet, leaping 20 feet, 4.25 inches in the long jump and clocking a time of 11.37 seconds in the 100.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- The Harlan Community boys soccer team improved to 3-0 overall Monday night with its third one-goal victory of the young season, winning 2-1 at Lewis Central in both squads’ Hawkeye Ten opener. The Cyclones had previously won a pair of 1-0 decisions vs.

 AUDUBON -- AHSTW placed in 10 events, led by a pair of second-place hurdles finishes from Jaycie Schueman, at Monday’s 12-team Audubon Wheeler Girls Early Bird track meet.

 MAPLETON -- The IKM-Manning girls track team scored 91 points and placed third at Tuesday’s Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto Co-Ed Invite. Denison-Schleswig won the girls half of the meet with 205 points, followed by MV-AO (118), IKM-M (91) and Charter Oak-Ute (75).

    HARLAN – The Shelby County Community Kids Fest will be held at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in Harlan Saturday, April 16 from 9-11:30 a.m.    Kids Fest is a community health and safety fair for children ages preschool through 5th grade and their families.  The event will be filled with entertainment and interactive activities for children, providing education and awareness of health and safety issues.

    NEVADA -- Dorothy M. Volkens, 85, Nevada, formerly of Shelby, died Sunday, April 10 in Nevada.    Services were held Thursday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m.

HARLAN – Harlan Community vocal students are heading to The Big Apple this week for a choral performance at a historical chapel as well as sightseeing and other musical offerings in New York City.    Ninth-12th grade vocal students have been afforded the opportunity to participate on the trip.  They will perform at St. Malachy’s Actors Chapel on Thursday, April 14 at 10 a.m.  St.

    HARLAN – An escapee from a residential work facility Sunday, April 10 was captured in Shelby County.    News reports indicate Colton Benson-Blaine,  25, a native of Harlan, was arrested in Shelby County.  Iowa law enforcement officials had been searching for Benson-Blaine after he allegedly escaped from the residential work facility.    According to reports from the Iowa Department of Corrections, Benson-Blaine failed to return to the Coun
