Bruck, Porter named third team All-State by Iowa’s baseball coaches

 STATE (Aug. 13) -- Seniors Connor Bruck of Harlan Community and Sam Porter of AHSTW were recognized earlier this week as third team All-State selections by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. Bruck was named a third team pitcher in Class 3A while Porter was cited as the third team first baseman in Class 2A. In addition, Bruck was one of 64 seniors from across the state selected for the 2020 IHSBCA All-Star Series.

Bruck leads young Cyclone squad within a game of state

 HARLAN -- It was a short season, but overall another good one for the Harlan Community baseball team. Opening the 2020 schedule three weeks late due to COVID-19 delays, the Cyclones went 14-4 during the next five and a half weeks, tied for third place in the Hawkeye Ten Conference at 8-2 and reached the Class 3A substate final round for the 10th consecutive year. The season ended with a bad sixth inning and a 12-2 loss at Dallas Center-Grimes

HCHS moves one step closer to state, eyes ‘21 improvement

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community softball team took another step forward in 2020, but also found there’s still work to be done to achieve its ultimate goal. Returning nearly the entire roster from a successful 2019 campaign, the Cyclones finished 15-5 in a COVID-19 shortened summer, placed second in the Hawkeye Ten at 8-2 and played in the program’s first regional final since 2013 - all without one senior on the roster. The season ended abruptl

First signs of fall at Harlan Community

 HARLAN (Aug. 6) -- With a hopeful eye toward playing full seasons this fall, the Harlan Community football and volleyball teams held preseason camps this week in preparation for the start of practices on Monday, Aug. 10. The annual Cyclone Football Camp of Champions is taking place Monday-Friday.

Fusselman wins Hobby Stock class of Midwest Madness Tour

 DENISON -- Jason Fusselman (#55 car) of Avoca was the points champion in the Culver’s of Carroll IMCA Hobby Stock Class in the 2nd annual Arnold Motor Supply Midwest Madness Tour, presented by Western Iowa Racing Results. The tour was held June 27-July 3 with racing held seven consecutive nights on seven different tracks. The event started at Shelby County Speedway in Harlan and finished at Crawford County Speedway in Denison.

American League rolls in IWL All-Star Game

 PORTSMOUTH (Aug. 5) -- Ryan Doran represented Walnut with two home runs, two doubles and six RBI and Trevor Jameson (Massena) also homered as part of a 3-for-4 night as the American League defeated the National League 10-0 in eight innings here Wednesday in the Iowa Western Baseball League’s All-Star Game. Shea Patterson (Massena) won the Home Run Derby prior to the game by hitting 18 balls over the fence.

SCS races cancelled Aug. 8

 HARLAN -- The Shelby County Speedway announced Wednesday (Aug. 5) that it has cancelled racing action for Saturday, August 8, due to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases in Shelby County. The track tentatively plans to resume racing on Saturday, August 15. Last week’s races were also called off due to rain.

Bruck on H-10 All-Academic list

 A total of 43 senior baseball and softball players from the Hawkeye Ten Conference, including Harlan Community's Connor Bruck, have been named to the league’s Summer Sports All-Academic Award list for 2020. All-Academic criteria includes being a senior letter winner with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher during their high school career.

Six local players named to All-District baseball teams

 AREA -- Six players from the Harlan Newspapers’ coverage area have been named to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association’s 2020 All-District baseball teams. First-team selections include senior pitcher Connor Bruck and junior catcher Brenden Bartley of Harlan Community (Class 3A Southwest) and AHSTW seniors Sam Porter (first base) and Joey Cunningham (outfield) for Class 2A Southwest.

2020 All-Conference Baseball & Softball Teams

   AREA -- Forty-one baseball and softball players from Harlan Community, AHSTW, IKM-Manning and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton were named to this year's all-conference teams for the Hawkeye Ten, Western Iowa and Rolling Valley conferences. The list of local players includes 11 first-team selections.

Pair of Vikings to play college baseball

 AVOCA -- Recent AHSTW graduates Sam Porter and Joel Sampson have signed letters of intent to continue their baseball careers at the collegiate level. Porter signed to play for Simpson College in Indianola, IA and will major in communications.

Academic All-State soccer teams released

 HARLAN -- Six members of the Harlan Community boys soccer team have been recognized on the 2020 Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association Academic All-State teams. Second team selections in Class 2A for HCHS included seniors Dalton Gross, Jacob Voge and Joe Devine as well as junior Jesse Schwery. Cyclones receiving honorable mention were seniors Isaac Jones and Colton Barnes. In past years, any player who participated in over half of their
