Rasmussen, Wolves rush by Rebels 35-14

 SLOAN (Oct. 2) -- IKM-Manning racked up a season-high 475 total yards, played turnover-free football and committed just two penalties Friday night, topping Westwood 35-14 for its second consecutive win. The Wolves improved to 2-2 in Class A, District 10 and 2-4 overall, picking up some momentum for their Oct. 9 regular season finale against district leader Logan-Magnolia (3-0, 5-1).

 EXIRA (Oct. 2) -- Ar-We-Va rushed out to a 47-6 halftime lead and cruised by Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton 61-12 here Friday night in the Spartans’ Homecoming game. The Rockets won for the second straight week and improved to 2-4 in 8-Player, District 8.  CRESTON (Oct. 2) -- Teagon Kasperbauer connected with Connor Frame for touchdown passes of 51, 65, 19 and 20 yards Friday night as the Harlan Community football team improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in district play with a 35-7 win at Creston/Orient-Macksburg. HCHS also got a 41-yard punt return TD from Joey Moser and led 27-0 at halftime.

 CRESTON (Oct. 2) -- Just seven days away from a potential battle of unbeatens vs. Lewis Central, Harlan Community is looking to keep its focus squarely on Creston/Orient-Macksburg Friday night as the prep football season roars into Week 6. The Cyclones, who slipped one spot to fourth in this week’s Associated Press Class 3A rankings, will take a 5-0 overall record and 3-0 District 9 mark into tonight’s road contest vs.

HCHS volleyball team 3rd at Nevada Tournament

 NEVADA (Sept. 26) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team placed third overall with a 2-2 record at last Saturday’s Nevada Tournament. HCHS won Pool C in the morning with 2-0 decisions over West Marshall (21-12, 21-16) and Carroll (21-12, 21-14), advancing to the three-team championship pool along with Lake Mills and Nevada. The Cyclones lost to Lake Mills 16-21, 14-21 and also lost a close match against Nevada 18-21, 19-21.

Spartans outscored by West Harrison gridders 56-42

 MONDAMIN (Sept. 25) -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton posted its highest point total of the season but was unable to slow down West Harrison last Friday night in a 56-42 loss to the Hawkeyes. The Spartans dropped to 0-4 on the season (all games in 8-Player, District 8) while West Harrison improved to 2-3. Exira-EHK scored 20 of its points in the second quarter and trailed just 32-26 at the break.

Local winners from Tiny Lund Memorial Weekend

  HARLAN -- The 28th Annual Tiny Lund Memorial Weekend was held September 25-26 at the Shelby County Speedway. The Dale Swanson Memorial Races were Friday night, followed by the Tiny Lund Memorial Races on Saturday night.

Big plays carry unbeaten Cyclones past Carroll

 CARROLL (Sept. 25) -- Connor Frame threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Aidan Hall just before halftime and opened the third quarter with a 59-yard TD catch from Teagon Kasperbauer Friday night, paving the way for the Harlan Community football team’s 28-14 win at Carroll. The third-ranked Cyclones utilized several big plays to outgain the Tigers 407-184 and stayed unbeaten on the season, improving to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Class 3A, District 9.

Seniors Van Baale, Gross pace HCHS in home meet

 HARLAN (Sept. 26) -- Brecken Van Baale wasn’t satisfied with her fourth-place showing at Tri-Center last week, so the Harlan Community senior did something about it during Saturday morning’s Cyclone Cross Country Invite. Looking strong from start to finish, Van Baale secured a career-best second-place medal at the Harlan Golf and Country Club, trailing only defending Class 1A state champion Peyton Pogge of Tri-Center.

AHSTW cancels sporting events for the week due to virtual learning format

 AVOCA (Sept. 27) -- Due to the AHSTW Community Schools’ transition to a 100 percent virtual learning format this week, all Viking and Lady Vike sporting events through Saturday, October 3, have been cancelled. AHSTW cancelled its volleyball game vs. Tri-Center last Thursday as well as Friday’s home football game against St. Albert.

Wolves top Ridge View for first win

 HOLSTEIN (Sept. 25) -- The IKM-Manning football team picked up its first win of the season on Friday night, scoring 20 unanswered points and holding off Ridge View 20-14 in Class A, District 10. The Wolves opened the second half with a tone-setting 10-minute scoring drive covering 62 yards in 18 plays to take a 14-6 lead.

Cyclone harriers sweep Tri-Center Invite titles

 NEOLA (Sept. 22) -- It was a Cyclone sweep across the board on Tuesday afternoon as Harlan Community won the team and individual titles at the Tri-Center Cross Country Invite. The fourth-ranked (Class 3A) Cyclone girls placed five runners in the top seven to post an impressive winning score of 20, besting two state-ranked 1A teams in No. 5 AHSTW (60) and No. 8 Logan-Magnolia (76).
