Foss qualifies for Drake at the wire; Cyclones 7th at Waukee

 WAUKEE -- Nick Foss earned a spot in the Drake Relays’ long jump Thursday night (April 20), placing second at the Waukee Boys Invitational for Harlan Community’s top performance of the meet. On the final night to improve times and distances for Drake, Foss went two and a half inches farther than his previous best in the long jump, topping out at 21-9 to secure his ticket to “America’s Athletic Classic” later this week.

HCHS girls win four golds at C.B. Invite, place fifth overall

Phipps signs with Morningside

 HARLAN -- Harlan Community senior Jessica Phipps has signed a letter of intent to join the Morningside College women’s bowling team in the fall of 2017. Jessica is the daughter of Donald and Nancy Phipps, Harlan. Phipps becomes the fourth Cyclone bowler in the last two years to sign with Morningside, joining Bailey Portwood, Elizabeth Stroud and Joshua Grote from the class of 2016.

Area athletes qualify five events for Drake Relays

 DES MOINES -- Area track and field athletes have qualified five events - four individual and one relay - for the 2017 Drake Relays in Des Moines later this week. The list of local qualifiers includes three entries for the Harlan Community girls team and one each for the HCHS and AHSTW boys.

Streit punches likely ticket to Drake in the discus

HCHS tennis girls score 9-0 win

 AUDUBON -- The Harlan Community girls tennis team picked up their first meet win of the season on Thursday, April 13, scoring a 9-0 victory at Audubon. All nine varsity matches were decided by scores of 8-0, 8-1, 8-2 or 8-3. The 8-0 decisions were recorded by Nicole Lange in singles play as well as the doubles team of Lexie Bruns and Taylor Andersen. HCHS also won two out of three junior varsity matches.

Viking boys improve to 4-0

 AVOCA -- The AHSTW boys soccer team picked up a pair of hard-fought home wins earlier this week, improving to 4-0 overall with victories of 3-1 over St. Albert Monday and 2-1 over Treynor on Tuesday. AHSTW 3, St. Albert 1 - Senior Preslyn Grobe scored a pair of goals and sophomore Kyle Branan added another as the Vikings notched an impressive non-conference win on Monday.

Cyclone golfers place fourth vs. strong Spencer Invite field

 SPENCER -- All six of Harlan Community’s golfers shot under 90 and finished in the top half of the field as the Cyclones placed fourth out of 13 teams at Monday’s Spencer Boys Golf Invitational. HCHS junior Kevin Campbell scored a 37 on the back nine and finished with a 5-over-par round of 77 to tie for eighth place out of 74 players in the field and earn a medal.

Rams, Knights outshoot HCHS

 HARLAN -- Glenwood and Kuemper Catholic posted the top five rounds of the day and both outscored Harlan Community in a boys golf triangular Tuesday (April 18) at the Harlan Golf and Country Club. Paced by three scores of 39, Glenwood won the meet with a team score of 159, followed by Kuemper’s 162 and the Cyclones’ 167.

 OMAHA, NEB. -- For the first time in eight years and 13 head-to-head matchups, Harlan Community got the best of Glenwood Thursday night in boys soccer. Scoring twice in each half and getting goals from four different players, the unbeaten Cyclones kept their shutout streak intact and ended a long dry spell vs.

Campbell’s second medal leads HCHS past LC

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Kevin Campbell earned medalist honors for the second straight meet as Harlan Community improved to 2-0 on the boys golf season with a 165-179 dual win over Lewis Central last Tuesday (April 11) at Fox Run Golf Club. Campbell started his round three over par after shooting a 6 on the first two holes, then played even par the rest of the way to shoot his second 39 in as many meets.

Cyclones top Audubon 9-0 in boys tennis

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community boys tennis team improved its dual record to 4-2 overall on Thursday (April 13) with a dominating 9-0 win over Audubon. HCHS played at Kuemper Catholic on Monday and will host Glenwood on Tuesday and Shenandoah on Thursday.

Schueman hurdles to pair of top-three medals at T-C

 NEOLA -- Senior Jaycie Schueman won the 400-meter hurdles and placed third in the 100-meter hurdles at Thursday’s Tri-Center Girls Track Invitational, leading AHSTW to an eighth-place team finish.
