HCHS soccer girls win opener

 CRESTON -- The Harlan Community girls soccer team opened the 2017 season with a win on Tuesday, holding off the Creston Panthers 2-1 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play. HCHS took a 2-0 lead at halftime on Haley Arkfeld’s breakaway goal and a penalty kick by Jenna Brelje. The Cyclones were able to stave off several Panther attacks the rest of the way as junior goalie Kenzie Jones finished with 12 saves.

Schueman wins 400 hurdles gold at Audubon girls meet

 AUDUBON -- AHSTW’s Jaycie Schueman won the 400-meter hurdles by more than three seconds and took second place in the 100-meter hurdles Monday night at the Audubon Girls Early Bird Invite. Nearly a dozen schools attended the early-season outdoor meet, which did not tabulate team scores. Logan-Magnolia led the field by winning eight events. Competing outside for the first time this spring, AHSTW placed in seven of 19 events overall.

Vikings’ Clay sprints to three golds at Jerome Howe Relays

 TREYNOR -- Gage Clay won two individual sprints and also anchored AHSTW’s gold medal 4x200 relay here Monday night, leading the Viking boys to fifth place out of 16 teams at the Jerome Howe Relays in Treynor. Clay cruised to victory in both the 100 and 200-meter dash while teaming with Sam Peterson, Korbin Martin and Cordale Armstrong to win the 4x200 in 1:35.7. AHSTW placed 13 times in 12 events overall and scored 65 points.

Wolves place sixth at Lake City

 LAKE CITY -- The IKM-Manning boys track team scored 15 times in 12 events on its way to placing sixth at Monday’s Ink Wunderly Relays in Lake City. Madrid claimed the team title with 11 gold medals and 198.5 points, finishing well ahead of second-place South Central Calhoun (102) and third-place Kuemper (67.5). The Wolves scored 46.5 points, led by Grant Stracke and Hunter Behrens placing third and fourth, respectively, in the discus and Jare

Cyclone boys blank Treynor in damp season opener

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community boys soccer team scored a pair of breakaway goals in the opening 20 minutes, then added an insurance goal midway through the second half to down Treynor 3-0 Thursday night in a cold and misty season opener at Merrill Field. The Cyclones’ first two goals - in the seventh and 20th minutes - were almost identical as seniors Devin Mahoney and Richard Blackman scored in breakaway fashion.

HCHS outlasts Eagles in double OT

 HARLAN -- It took nearly 94 minutes and 19 shots on goal, but Harlan Community finally found the back of the net to top Underwood 1-0 in a double-overtime boys soccer match at Merrill Field Friday night. The game was moved to Harlan due to a wet field at Underwood. HCHS senior Richard Blackman scored the game’s only goal with 6:15 left in the second of two 10-minute OT periods, lifting the Cyclone boys to 2-0 on the season.

IKM-M teams win six golds at Lake City

 LAKE CITY -- The IKM-Manning girls won four events and the boys struck gold twice during Monday’s Chelsey Henkenius Co-Ed Early Bird Track Meet at South Central Calhoun. The Wolves’ sister combo of Payton Sporrer (3,000) and Shyanne Sporrer (800) both won an individual race and also teamed with Aly Stadtlander and Jodi Opperman to place first in the distance medley relay.

Cyclone girls challenge Denison at Monarch Relays

 DENISON -- A gold-medal rally in the 4x400 relay wasn’t enough to net the Harlan Community girls a team title Tuesday night, but it did provide a solid finishing touch to an encouraging performance at the Monarch Co-Ed Relays. Competing in chilly, but dry, conditions on Denison’s brand new track, the Cyclone girls led the six-team field by winning nine events and finished just seven points behind Denison-Schleswig (140 to 133) in the final te

    CEDAR RAPIDS -- Harlan Community’s Allison Bruck and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton’s Maggie Rasmussen have been selected to play in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association’s Larry Niemeyer Senior All-Star Basketball Games this weekend at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. The event consists of six games over two days - Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2 - with 12 all-star teams selected.
