 MOUNT AYR -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton freshman Jacey Anthofer placed fourth in the medalist standings at Monday’s (May 15) Class 1-A first round regional girls golf tournament, clinching a spot in the regional final. Anthofer carded a 98 over 18 holes at the Mount Ayr Country Club, finishing behind CAM’s Sammie Jahde (76) and Mount Ayr’s Abbey Schafer (86) and Tessa Shields (93).

 MAPLETON -- Hanna Mullen’s top-10 finish highlighted the IKM-Manning girls’ final golf outing of the season Monday (May 15) as the Wolves placed seventh out of nine teams in the Class 2-A first-round regional tournament at Mapleton’s Willow Vale Golf Course. Alta-Aurelia won the Region 1B meet by 38 shots over host Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto, 385 to 423, with both teams advancing to the May 22 Region 1 final in Moville. IKM-M scored a 489 and to

 GRISWOLD -- Led by Everett Carroll’s medalist round of 82, Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton placed first by 30 strokes in last Friday’s (May 12) Class 1-A Boys Sectional Golf Tournament at the Griswold Country Club. Exira-EHK finished with a 351 team score, easily outlasting Boyer Valley (381) atop a field of eight schools.

 DENISON -- The results did not include any team or individual advancement, but Harlan Community boys golf coach Chad Swanson was pleased with his team’s final performance of the 2017 season. Posting four scores that ranked in or near the top half of a tough 48-player field, the Cyclones scored a 327 to place fourth out of eight teams in last Friday’s (May 12) Class 3-A Sectional Tournament held on Denison’s 18-hole Majestic Hills Golf Course.

 MENLO -- Erik Jorgensen’s steady play over 18 holes was rewarded last Friday (May 12) when the AHSTW senior placed fifth in the Class 2-A Boys Sectional Tournament at Menlo’s 5x80 Golf Club, punching a ticket to this week’s district meet. Jorgensen earned the final individual qualifier spot from his sectional, shooting nine-hole rounds of 38 and 40 for a 6-over-par 78.

 CARROLL -- The IKM-Manning boys golf team finished its season by placing eighth in last Friday’s (May 12) Class 2-A Sectional Tournament at the Carroll Country Club. Kuemper Catholic won the team title with a score of 318 and advanced to district play along with OA-BCIG (354) and East Sac County (367). The Wolves tallied a 399, led by Sam Gross with a 96 (43-53) and Jared Henkelman’s 98 (53-45).

 DES MOINES -- The girls and boys track teams from Harlan Community, AHSTW, IKM-Manning and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton have combined to qualify 26 entries for this week’s Co-Ed State Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium (May 18-20). The HCHS girls and boys teams will take the most events to state with eight and six qualifiers, respectively.

 DENISON -- The Harlan Community girls and boys track teams left Thursday’s Class 3-A State Qualifying Meet in Denison with a combined 14 events they will take to this week’s State Track and Field Championships. And while there’s always a few regrets regarding the events that didn’t quite make it, both Cyclone squads were able to accomplish most of their state-qualifier goals going into the three-day co-ed state meet Thursday, Friday and Satur

 MISSOURI VALLEY -- AHSTW and IKM-Manning combined to qualify 10 events for state Thursday night (May 11) while competing in the Class 2-A Co-Ed State Qualifying Track Meet held at Missouri Valley. The Viking boys led the area contingent with five qualifiers, the AHSTW and IKM-M girls both qualified two events and the IKM-M boys had one qualifier.

 AUDUBON -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton distance runner Evan Wilson and the Spartan boys shuttle hurdle relay team stepped up with their best times of the year on Thursday (May 11), earning at-large state meet bids after placing third in the Class 1-A State Qualifying Track Meet held at Audubon. The Spartans’ lone qualifiers will compete Thursday at the 2017 State Track and Field Championships inside Des Moines’ Drake Stadium. Wilson, a junior,

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community girls tennis team finished regular-season play with a 2-8 record following last Tuesday’s 8-1 dual loss vs. Red Oak. Nicole Lange picked up the Cyclones’ only victory in the No. 2 singles match, beating Macy Baker 8-5. Ashley Petsche (2-8), Haley Swisher (0-8), Brooke Nelson (1-8), Lexie Bruns (1-8) and Taylor Andersen (5-8) all lost during singles play and Red Oak also swept the doubles matches.

 HARLAN -- Losing two of their top players to injury during the course of the game, Harlan Community was defeated by 13th-ranked (1-A) Underwood 4-1 in girls soccer action at Merrill Field Friday night (May 12). With the scored tied 1-1 midway through the first half, HCHS senior Haley Arkfeld suffered a leg injury in the 19th minute and was carried off the field.

 HARLAN -- Eleven games into the soccer season, only two teams have managed to find the back of the net against Harlan Community. Defensive shutout number nine was posted Monday night (May 8) at Merrill Field when the Cyclone boys earned their most impressive win yet with a 1-0 decision over Lewis Central. The game’s only score came in the 23rd minute when HCHS junior Tanner Fink’s corner kick curled back toward the net and was deflected in by

 HARLAN -- One night after suffering a 10-0 loss at the hands of Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, the Harlan Community girls soccer team picked up a much-needed 6-1 home win over AHSTW in non-conference action on Tuesday (May 9). Kylee Hinz and Haley Arkfeld scored two goals each for the Cyclones while freshman Lucy Borkowski and senior Michaela Bissen both scored their first goal of the season. Bissen also had two assists in the match as HCHS
