HARLAN — A group of former Harlan Community High School baton twirlers dusted off their batons to perform during the Homecoming parade and pregame show last Friday. Vicki Strissel’s daughter, Emeri, is the HCHS Marching Band’s lone baton twirler this year, and Emeri has hosted baton camps for the past few years in hope to draw more interest in the activity.

HARLAN —Sometimes great ideas take years to put into action. That axiom is now visible for all to see with the Nishnabotna Valley Rural Electric Cooperative (NVREC) tower in Harlan is now adorned with pink lights to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout October.NVREC employee Aaron Nippert and his 17-year-old daughter, Kennedy, have been kicking this idea around for years.

After suffering back-to-back losses to the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors and Creston Panthers, the HCHS Cyclone football team will be on the road this Friday night at Perry High School taking on the Bluejays.

It was another strong showing for the HCHS Cyclones girls cross country team taking a first place finish as a team with 41 points, 89 points ahead of Denison who finished in second place.

The Exira-EHK Spartans volleyball team posted a big conference win against the Boyer Valley Bulldogs Tuesday, sweeping the Bulldogs 25-22, 26-24, and 27-25. The Spartans earned their fourth consecutive win and their ninth of the season.

Saturday morning, the HCHS Cyclones girls cross country team took another first place finish at the Harlan Golf & Country Club, finishing two points ahead of Lewis Central and three ahead of Glenwood.

Sometimes a game can come down to one call, and that certainly proved to be the case Friday night for the HCHS Cyclones football team against the Creston Panthers with a controversial call in the fourth quarter losing a close 43-42 battle losing their third game.

After losing set one of Thursday’s volleyball match 25-20, the AHSTW Vikings came together and won the next three sets with scores of 25-23, 25-14, and 25-22 snapping a 15-game losing streak, earning their third win, and handing the IKM-Manning Wolves their ninth loss. The Wolves came into the match having lost their previous two matches against East Sac County and Tri-Center.
