SHELBY – Iowa farm history will be showcased September 9 and 10 at Carstens Farm during the 41st Annual Carstens Farm Days. This farm show showcases threshing, sawmill operations, crafters and vendors, a quilt show and of course, tractors.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office assists in fentanyl investigation

COUNCIL BLUFFS – Shelby County Sheriff’s Office assisted in an investigation which led to arrests of Cass County residents for conspiring to distribute fentanyl causing serious bodily injury or death, according to a report from the Southern District Court of Iowa.Collin Jacob Clarken, 21, was sentenced to 252 months in prison. Colby Ray Clarken, 25, was sentenced to 240 months in prison. There is no parole in the federal system.

Pipeline permit hearing scheduled to begin Tuesday

Harlan Community School District welcomes new staff members for upcoming school year

HARLAN — Harlan Community School District classes resume Wednesday, and the school district welcomes several new staff members.· Kimberly Noethe joins the staff as a high school English and IWCC Concurrent Enrollment Composition teacher. She will continue to coach individual and large group speech at AHSTW this year and hopes to get into Harlan’s speech program as soon as there is an opportunity.

“Kool Gold” broadcasting earns KNOD a spot in Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame

HARLAN — KNOD  105.3 FM will be inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame Labor Day weekend.“It’s quite an honor,” said Station Manager Pam Stessman. “For a small market station to get something like this is amazing.” The Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association annually inducts musicians, bands, DJs, and others who have significantly contributed to rock and roll music in the state. Every year, a radio station is honored.

Magazine’s “Prettiest Farm” is in rural Shelby County

ELK HORN — Deb and James Bieker of rural Elk Horn are the proud winners of the 2022 Prettiest Farm distinction for the Our Iowa magazine. Eight years ago, their family friend Deb Hastert went to the couple’s home and took several pictures of the farm. Hastert then submitted those photos to the magazine as a recommendation to be chosen for the feature.

Former Harlan resident Jan Mickelson passes away at 74

AREA — Former Harlan resident and WHO Radio broadcaster Jan Mickelson passed away July 29, 2023. He was 74 years old. Mickelson was born in Ft. Dodge to Omar and Evonelle Mickelson. He and his family lived in Harlan from 1963 until he graduated from Harlan High School in 1967. While in Harlan, he was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, and participated in the youth group.

EARLING — Heather Kohles and Jill Schiltz are siblings and, together, make up the team that runs Logo’d Up in Earling.The business typically completes roughly three orders a day. They have done many orders in the local area, from volunteer shirts to making several county fair t-shirts across the region.Logo’d Up prints on and sells several different types of clothing, such as shirts, koozies, sweatpants, sweatshirts and hats.

SC Conservation Board and Pheasants Forever create new habitat area

SHELBY COUNTY — In 2021 the Lila Rickel family approached the Shelby County Conservation Board (SCCB) with an interest in selling approximately thirteen acres of land in Shelby County. Elk Horn bank robbery attempt foiled; subject in custody

 ELK HORN — An attempted bank robbery was thwarted in Elk Horn Monday morning. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reported a call was received approximately 10 a.m. August 7.

Shelby County Extension and Outreach plans Farmland Leasing meeting in Harlan on August 10

SHELBY COUNTY — The Iowa State University Shelby County Extension and Outreach office will host a meeting on August 10, beginning at 10:00 a.m. with doors open at 9:30 a.m. The location is at the Shelby County Extension office located at 906 6th Street.

CEDAR FALLS — The 51st Iowa Shrine Bowl was held Saturday July 22, 2023 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.Coach Todd Bladt, Aidan Hall and Stephen Leinen all participated in the weeklong activities put on by the Iowa Shrine Bowl organization which included Shriner’s hospital presentations, interactive activities with some Shriner’s kids, as well as practices for the game and some fun outings for the players and coaches.

Harlan Community School District will welcome students back August 23

The district has released the following information for the upcoming school year.RegistrationAll Preschool - 12th grade registration will be completed by mail. Materials may be returned by mail or placed in drop boxes located outside the student’s principal’s office. Supply lists are located on the district website.
