 STATEWIDE — The Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) evidentiary hearing for Summit Carbon Solutions’ petition for a hazardous liquid pipeline resumed last Tuesday and concluded the next day after a month-long recess due to scheduling conflicts with the venue wherethe hearing was held. The hearing, which began at the Cardiff Event Center in Fort Dodge Aug.

Swanson is hanging up dry cleaning business for retirement

Harlan — Barb Swanson, owner of Touch of Class Dry Cleaning in Harlan, has retired after 29 years of business.Swanson opened Touch of Class in November 1994. “We put all the piping and equipment in,” Swanson said. “It was a shell when we went there.”At that time, she had already had over 13 years of experience in the dry cleaning business, and she had worked at her parents’ laundry mat, D & A Laundry, while she was in high school.

An “Extraordinary Nurse” is recognized at Myrtue Medical Center

HARLAN — Nurses at Myrtue Medical Center are being honored with The DAISY Award  For Extraordinary Nurses. Iowa State University’s Greenlee School of Journalism name Alan and Steve Mores recipients of James W. Schwartz Award

AMES — The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University has named Alan and Steve Mores the recipients of its 2023 James W. Schwartz Award. The annual award recognizes distinguished service to journalism and communication and is the highest honor conferred by the school.The Mores brothers have been involved in the Iowa newspaper business since they were children.

Countywide Emergency Medical Services funding will be on the ballot November 7

SHELBY COUNTY — Voters in Shelby County will vote on Emergency Medical Services essential funding November 7.  Public Measure TD  asks voters to fund a county wide EMS service for a period of 15 years through a tax levy.  The proposed amount is $.75 cents per $1,000 of taxable property within the county.  In addition, there will be an income surtax assessment on Iowa individuals’ income tax returns for Shelby County residents at a rate of 1%.T

Middle School runners compete at Statewide Cross Country Meet

 ANKENY — Six Harlan Community Middle School students volunteered to run in the Washburn Classic Middle School Statewide Cross Country Meet Saturday, October 14.  The meet was held at Centennial High School in Ankeny.  Students who competed included (as pictured) seventh grade boys Ben Cox and Brogan Schechinger; seventh grade girls Charlotte Cronin and Julia Heslink; and eighth grade girls Aspen Bieker and Ashlyn Rau.
