Brother, sister grappling duo tough on the mat

For HCHS Freshman Sawyer Hudson and his sister, HCMS 7th grader, Georgia Hudson, the love for wrestling is a family thing. The duo are both Harlan wrestlers, with Georgia calling Sawyer her inspiration.
With Sawyer being a few years ahead of her, Georgia has found him to be her biggest influence, along with some professional figures.

Cyclones offense gets shut down in 2nd half

The HCHS Cyclones boys basketball team’s offense couldn’t keep up with the Kuemper Catholic Knights Tuesday night at home, getting beat 90-61 for their first loss of the season.
“They’re phenomenal,” said Cyclone Head Coach Mitch Osborn. “They’re the real deal. We’re a work in progress, and we’re going to get better. I thought we had a lot of improvement offensively from the Shenandoah game to here.”

Swensen sets school record in Cyclone home victory

Senior Cyclone Molly Swensen erupted Tuesday night from beyond the 3-point line making 10 3-point shots and setting a new school record, helping to lead the Cyclones to a 76-54 victory over the Kuemper Catholic Knights.

Cyclone boys wrestlers take two of three in quad

Tuesday, the HCHS Cyclones boys wrestling team competed in a quad that featured St. Albert, Glenwood, and Southwest Iowa, coming away with victories over St. Albert and Southwest Iowa.
“I couldn’t be more proud,” said Cyclone Head Coach Adam Bendorf. “We have a good group of young men here. They are a lot of hard working boys and they get out there and put it all out on the mat.”

Cyclones host quad on Senior Night

The HCHS Cyclones girls wrestling team hosted a quad Monday which featured Carroll, Kuemper Catholic, and Denison.
It was also Senior Night as Secilia Kurtz, Katie Namanny, Emma Christensen, Paige Wilwerding, Kyrsten Madden, and Addison Obrecht were honored by the school.

Cyclone wrestlers place fourth at Dan Hill Invite

The HCHS Cyclones boys wrestling team earned a fourth place finish with 148.5 Saturday at the Dan Hill Invite in Harlan. Logan-Magnolia won the event with 248 points.
Senior Cyclone Jesse Jens achieved two milestones earning his 100th career victory and 50th career pin.

Vikings drop season opener to Eagles

Early into Friday’s home game, the AHSTW Vikings started off matching the Underwood Eagles shot-for-shot and point-for-point, but the Eagles soon soared over the Vikings, flying away with the game en route to a 75-46 victory.

In the first quarter of Friday’s game with the AHSTW Vikings girls basketball team trailing 5-2, Sophomore Viking Bella Lamp made a shot from 3-point range tying the game at five, but following Lamp’s shot, the Eagles offense erupted going on an 18-0 that went into the second quarter en route to a 54-19 win, handing the Vikings their second loss.

Cyclones win first game in close fashion over Mustangs

Friday night, the HCHS Cyclones boys basketball team opened up their season coming away victorious over the Shenandoah Mustangs, 58-55.
“Shenandoah improved a lot last year,” said Cyclone Head Coach Mitch Osborn. “They have a really good ball club, especially on their home floor. The young kids are good. It was definitely a very tough game.”

Cyclones earn first win of the season

After losing their first two games, the HCHS Cyclones girls basketball team was able to squeeze out a win in close fashion, 66-62 to Shenandoah Friday night on the road.
“It was one of those games where it wasn’t a blowout and you had to manage the game,” said Cyclone Head Coach Zach Klaassen. “We were down here and there. Nobody panicked. Everybody stayed calm and just played basketball. It was a fun night for us.”

Cyclones finish 5th at Invite; Stephens takes 1st

The HCHS girls wrestling team came away with a fifth place finish overall Thursday night at the Treynor Invite with 62 points, 114 points behind the winner, Clarinda with 176.

The Woodbine Tigers started Tuesday’s game with an 8-0 run, en route to a 68-28 victory, handing the Exira-EHK Spartans their first loss of the season.

Cyclones fall to Saintes on the road, 71-58

Tuesday, the HCHS Cyclones girls basketball team was hoping to get their first win, but fell to the St. Albert Saintes 71-58 for their second loss of the season.
“I think we have one huge struggle and it’s turnovers,” said Cyclone Head Coach Zach Klaassen. “The good news is we think it’s fixable. We’re going to get serious about working on it. If we clean those up, we have a chance to win ballgames.”

Six Cyclones compete in Ridge View Wrestling Invitational

Cyclone wrestlers Addison Obrecht, Annaleigh Sheehan, Elle Stephens, Kyrsten Madden, Danica Schwery, and Hallie Lopez competed in the Ridge View Wrestling Invitational Nov. 19.
“They wrestled really well at the Ridge View tournament,” said Cyclone Head Coach Tarah Devlin-Lawler. “We were battling some nervousness about being back on the mat, but they were able to come back and put that aside and they wrestled really well.”

Cyclones drop season opener in second half

The Cyclones offense couldn’t match the Treynor Cardinals offense Tuesday as the Cardinals cruised to a 64-50 victory, earning their second win of the season, and handing the Cyclones their first loss.
