 GLENWOOD (Jan.

Cyclone girls bowlers win Red Oak Tournament

 RED OAK (Jan. 12) -- The Harlan Community girls bowling team won Tuesday’s four-team Red Oak Tournament while the HCHS boys placed fourth. The Cyclone girls posted a winning score of 2,268 to outlast Lewis Central by 43 pins.

Bowling: HCHS sweeps Creston

 ATLANTIC (Jan. 9) -- The Harlan Community bowling teams picked up a pair of dual wins over Creston last Saturday in a meet that was held at the Atlantic Super Bowl Sports Bar & Grill. Despite rolling their lowest team score of the year, the Cyclone girls were able to hold off the Panthers 1984-1936 after being outscored by 28 pins in the Baker games.

Freund, Schwery lead Cyclones to fourth at T-C Invite

 NEOLA (Jan. 9) -- Luke Freund and Jesse Schwery both won individual championships and Zane Bendorf placed second last Saturday to lead Harlan Community to fourth place in the team standings of the Tri-Center Wrestling Invite. HCHS had 10 out of 12 wrestlers place in the top eight (seven in the top four) and scored 138 points - just one behind West Monona for third.

Vikings finish 9th at Rollin Dyer meet

 ATLANTIC (Jan. 9) -- Six out of eight AHSTW wrestlers placed in the top eight last Saturday as the Vikings finished ninth out of 16 teams at the annual Rollin Dyer Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic. Sergeant Bluff-Luton won a tight three-team battle for first place with 176 points, followed by New Hampton/Turkey Valley (174) and Humboldt (171).

Lady Vikes finish strong to beat Trojans

 AVOCA (Jan. 8) -- The AHSTW girls responded to Tri-Center’s big third quarter with an equally dominant fourth quarter last Friday night, pulling away down the stretch for a 56-45 Western Iowa Conference win. The Lady Vikes (8-4, 5-3 WIC) built a 31-21 halftime lead but were outscored 18-5 in the third to fall behind by three.

Shooting woes strike again as Cyclones fall to Falcons

 HARLAN (Jan. 8) -- The offensive struggles continued for the Harlan Community boys basketball team Friday in a 44-39 home loss to St. Albert. One night after scoring 77 points in a win over Red Oak, the Cyclones shot below 25 percent and scored less than 42 points for the second time in three games since the holiday break. The final numbers saw HCHS make just 4-of-22 two-point shots and 7-of-29 three-pointers for 21.6 percent overall.

Big second quarter carries Cyclone boys past Red Oak

 HARLAN (Jan. 7) -- All five Harlan Community starters scored in double figures Thursday night as the Cyclone boys topped Red Oak 77-58 in Hawkeye Ten action. Sparked by a 12-0 run, HCHS outscored the Tigers 30-16 in the second quarter to take control. Will McLaughlin led the way for the Cyclones with 20 points and nine rebounds, shooting 7-of-11 from the field.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Getting up shots wasn’t a problem for the Harlan Community boys basketball team Tuesday night at Lewis Central. Selecting good shots and making them was another story. Struggling from start to finish to find the bottom of the net, HCHS came out of Christmas break by shooting 25 percent - 6-of-30 from three-point range, 9-of-30 on twos - in a 46-41 loss to the Titans that did not count in the Hawkeye Ten standings. The Cyclon

Wolves earn first WIC victory

 MANNING (Jan. 5) -- Playing for the first time in more than three weeks, IKM-Manning opened January with a convincing 54-29 home win over winless Missouri Valley on Tuesday night, improving to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the Western Iowa Conference. Connor Keller and Brody Swearingen scored 11 points each to lead the Wolves while Kyler Rasmussen added 10 points and four assists and Cooper Irlemeier had eight points.
