Freund wins Hawkeye Ten title as HCHS wrestlers 5th at conference meet

Cyclones split double dual vs. Panthers, Titans

 HARLAN (Jan. 28) -- The Harlan Community wrestlers completed their regular dual season Thursday with a Senior Night split against Creston/Orient-Macksburg and Lewis Central. Creston/O-M won the meet by defeating LC 81-0 and beating HCHS 55-19. The Cyclones finished the night with a 66-3 victory over the short-handed Titans. HCHS (15-7 overall) tied Atlantic for fourth place in the Hawkeye Ten dual standings at 7-3.

Cyclone girls bowlers rally past OABCIG

 IDA GROVE (Jan. 21) -- The Harlan Community girls bowling team used a Baker games rally to defeat OABCIG by 18 pins last Thursday while the Cyclone boys lost their dual to the Falcons by a margin of 345. HCHS won the girls meet 2,341 to 2,323 despite OABCIG boasting the top two individual scores of the day as Amber Hoefling rolled a 435 (244-191) and Kylee Dausel had a 342 (181-161).

HCHS places ninth at tough Bishop Heelan Wrestling Invitational

 SIOUX CITY (Jan. 23) -- Led by second-place finishes from Zane Bendorf, Jesse Schwery and Jeremiah Davis, Harlan Community came in ninth out of 12 teams at the Bishop Heelan Wrestling Invite last Saturday. Grand Island (Nebraska) led the field with 197 points and five individual champs, followed by Norfolk in second place with 177.5 points and Logan-Magnolia in third with 164.

Vikings’ Pauley wins title at I-35 Tourney

 TRURO (Jan. 23) -- Denver Pauley won a championship at 170 pounds last Saturday to highlight AHSTW’s ninth-place showing at the Rich Gray Wrestling Invitational hosted by Interstate 35. Four Viking place-winners combined to score 80 points in the meet, placing them ninth out of 17 schools. Pauley (25-6) led the way with an impressive 4-0 day at 170.

District basketball assignments out for 2A, 1A

 AREA -- Boys basketball district assignments for Class 2A and 1A were released last Friday by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. AHSTW, ranked second in the latest 2A rankings by the Associated Press, will be part of a 12-team Substate 8. IKM-Manning and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton will be bracketed in separate districts of Class 1A, Substate 8. Postseason competition will begin with Class 1A preliminary round games on Friday, Feb.

HCHS wrestlers sweep Kuemper quad, now 6-2 in H-10

 CARROLL (Jan. 21) -- Eight Harlan Community wrestlers went 3-0 on the night as the Cyclones swept Thursday’s quad at Kuemper Catholic. HCHS picked up Hawkeye Ten wins over Kuemper (60-10) and Red Oak (60-18) while also beating AHSTW (63-12), improving to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference. AHSTW, which had just six wrestlers competing, finished 0-3 in the meet and is now 11-4 in duals.

AHSTW boys overcome early 17-4 deficit to beat IKM-Manning

 MANNING (Jan. 22) -- AHSTW boys basketball coach G.G. Harris fully expected a tough ball game when his third-ranked (2A) Vikings ventured to IKM-Manning Friday night. What he got was all that and more. Not known for their outside shooting prowess, the Wolves drilled five early threes in taking a 17-4 lead.

Canada places 4th at Girls State Wrestling Tourney

 IOWA CITY (Jan. 22-23) -- AHSTW’s Bella Canada earned a fourth-place state medal at 195 pounds over the weekend at the 2021 IWCOA Girls State Wrestling Tournament in Iowa City. Canada went 4-2 during competition Friday and Saturday, earning 20 points for AHSTW and placing fourth out of 19 wrestlers in her bracket. Her only two losses came against Ankeny Centennial’s Grace Gray.

Osborn hired as Benedictine head football coach

 ATCHISON, KAN. -- Following 16 highly-successful years as part of the powerhouse football program at Northwest Missouri State University, Harlan native Joel Osborn has found a new home. On Tuesday, Osborn was introduced as the new head football coach at Benedictine College, an NAIA Division I school located just off the Missouri River in Atchison, Kansas. Osborn was hired on Thursday, Jan.

Milliken, McMurphy swimming for AL

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (Jan. 19) -- For the second straight year, Harlan Community sophomores Kaiden Milliken and Reilly McMurphy are competing for the Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln boys swim team, also known as the CB Swim Team. The Lynx, who have just six swimmers on the roster, were defeated by a deep and talented Sioux City Spartans team 122-42 on Tuesday.
