MISSOURI VALLEY (April 6) -- The AHSTW golf teams were both defeated by Missouri Valley Tuesday afternoon at the Logan-Mo. Valley Country Club. Led by Jackson Tennis’ medalist round of 38, Missouri Valley won the boys dual 184-197.

 AUDUBON (April 1) -- The Harlan Community girls won all seven relays and eight total events while AHSTW took home two gold medals from Thursday’s Audubon Girls Early Bird Track Meet. Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton also competed in the 16-team meet and placed in two events. Team scores were not kept, but HCHS would have out-pointed the field in a regular meet after placing at least once in 14 of 19 events. The Cyclones showed their toughness and de

 WEST DES MOINES (April 1) -- Led by Aidan Hall’s sweep of the 100 and 200-meter sprints, Harlan Community won four events and placed third out of six teams at the Dowling Catholic Relays on Thursday night. HCHS scored 11 times in nine events overall, posting 44 points as place-winners consisted of just the top five individuals per event and the top three in relays. Hall recorded winning times of 11.47 in the 100 and 23.25 in the 200.

 TREYNOR (April 1) -- Danny Kinsella’s late penalty kick proved to be the difference maker Thursday night as Treynor handed Harlan Community a 3-2 defeat in the boys soccer season opener for both squads. Trailing 2-1 at halftime, HCHS tied the score with 24:37 left in the match on Mason Anderson’s back side header goal off a crossing assist from Ashton Lyon. The score remained tied until the 12:17 mark when the Cyclones were called for a foul

 DES MOINES (April 1) -- Kole Branan and Raydden Grobe scored first-half goals for AHSTW and the Vikings were able to hold off Grand View Christian for a season-opening 2-1 road victory Thursday night. Grobe assisted Branan’s goal with a throw-in and later scored unassisted to cap the scoring for AHSTW.

 PERRY -- The Harlan Swim Club completed the 2020-21 season on February 27 at the Greater Iowa Swim League State Meet in Perry. The state meet featured two sessions with girls participating in the morning session and the boys swimming in the afternoon. Both teams had their best state finish since the Harlan Swim Club started in 2017.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (March 30) -- The Harlan Community boys tennis team opened the season on Tuesday with a 9-0 dual loss at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln. HCHS did win the junior varsity dual, prevailing in seven of nine matches. The 2021 Cyclones return just two varsity players from the 2019 team in four-year letter winners Brock Bruns and Mitchell Rueschenberg, who will be the team’s number one and two players.

 LAKE CITY (March 29) -- Quentin Dreyer’s sweep of the 3,200 and 1,600-meter runs accounted for half of IKM-Manning’s four gold medals here Monday night as the Wolves opened the season at South Central Calhoun’s Chelsey Henkenius Co-Ed Early Bird Track Meet. Dreyer clocked a winning time of 11:21.2 in the 3,200 and later won the mile in 5:11.2.

 AVOCA (March 30) -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton’s Tyler Petersen and AHSTW’s Ally Meyers earned medalist honors Tuesday in a season-opening co-ed golf triangular at the Avoca Country View Golf and Grille. Petersen carded a 45 for the top score of the day while Meyers paced the girls field with a 52. Team winners included the AHSTW girls by a slim 250-254 margin over CAM and the CAM boys by just one stroke (218-219) over AHSTW.

 HARLAN (March 26) -- It was a “Friendly Friday” at Merrill Field last week as the Harlan Community girls and boys soccer teams both held scrimmages against AHSTW. Each scrimmage consisted of two 30-minute halves. By rule, no score was kept.

 HARLAN -- Following 27 outstanding seasons, Steve Daeges has announced his retirement as the Harlan Community High School head baseball coach. Daeges, who guided the Cyclones to three state titles and five runner-up finishes during a hall of fame career, notified his players, assistant coaches and HCSD Activities Director Davis Pattee of his decision on Tuesday, March 23. A 1972 graduate of Harlan Community, Daeges returned to his alma mater

 CARROLL (March 25) -- The Harlan Community track and field teams opened the season on a chilly and damp night at Carroll Thursday, combining for 12 gold medals and both placing second at the Carroll Early Bird Track Meet. Glenwood swept the team titles in a competitive battle with HCHS. The Ram girls scored 159 points, followed by the Cyclones with 138 and Carroll with 101.

 ATLANTIC (March 24) -- Harlan Community alum Joe Brummer is the new head football coach for Atlantic High School following approval by the Atlantic Board of Education on Wednesday. Brummer, a 2012 HCHS graduate, told Atlantic radio station KSOM that he was ready to “hit the ground running” in his new post, putting an emphasis on the program’s off-season weight and agility program. As a two-way starting lineman for Harlan Community, Brummer wa

 DES MOINES -- The Iowa Girls Coaches Association has named four area student-athletes to its 2021 All-State Girls Basketball teams. Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton sophomore guard Quinn Grubbs was selected as a Class 1A first-teamer and Spartan junior forward Macy Emgarten made the 1A third team.

 AVOCA -- AHSTW senior Morgan Holtz signed a letter of intent on March 10 to continue her education and soccer career at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs. Holtz has played two seasons for the Lady Vikes prior to last year’s season being cancelled due to COVID-19.
