In the third quarter of Friday’s home basketball game, the Atlantic Trojans rallied to bring themselves back within three points of the HCHS Cyclones girls basketball team. 
Cyclone Head coach Zach Klaassen called a timeout, and when play resumed, Cyclone Junior Addison Wicks scored the next two shots, followed by another two in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points on the night, helping lead her team to a 44-32 victory.

Hoping to snap their 5-game losing streak, the Exira-EHK Spartans boys basketball team started off Thursday’s home game strong against the Ar-We-Va Rockets leading at the end of the first quarter and tied at halftime, but the Rockets offense came alive in the second half, handing the Spartans a 69-56 loss.

The Exira-EHK Spartans girls basketball team rolled into a Thursday night showdown with the Ar-We-Va Rockets and dominated them on both ends of the floor to cruise to a 65-27 victory for their second consecutive win.
“We’ve just got to figure out when we attack, that’s when we find our rhythm,” said Spartan Senior Harlee Fahn. “It always starts on defense, and with defense you can just get out and go.”

 ELK HORN — The Exira-EHK School District is considering the possibility of a four-day school week.  The district had an informational meeting Tuesday, January 7 for parents, guardians, and community members.  Superintendent Trevor Miller said there were approximately 55 in attendance.

 HARLAN  — Gervas Mgonja will be the new Harlan city administrator. The Harlan City Council voted unanimously to appoint Mgonja to the position during the Tuesday, January 7 Council Meeting. Mgonja brings over 20 years of experience in the financial service industry. He holds a master’s degree in business administration with advanced knowledge in strategic planning, financial analysis, and organizational leadership.

The struggles continue for the Exira-EHK Spartans boys basketball team as they’ve dropped their fifth consecutive game, most recently losing 78-44 Tuesday night to the Woodbine Tigers.

After dropping their season opener to the Woodbine Tigers 55-39, the Exira-EHK Spartans girls basketball team returned to face the Tigers Tuesday night on the road and won 58-44.
“I think our first game we had against them we didn’t come ready to play,” said Sophomore Taryn Petersen. “I think we came in ready to play better than they did tonight, and I think we had more energy than they did. Energy gets us going.”

The HCHS Cyclones boys basketball team lost a close battle 59-56 to the Glenwood Rams Tuesday night on the road.
“I was very proud of our guys last night,” said Cyclone Head Coach Mitch Osborn. “I thought we went on the road and played pretty well. It was a back-and-forth game, but Glenwood is 10-2 for a reason. They have a great team.”

After a tough loss Friday at home against St. Albert, the HCHS Cyclones girls basketball team returned to action Tuesday, getting a 60-45 road win over the Glenwood Rams.
