Richard “Pete” Petersen was born on August 19, 1931, in rural Harlan, to Harry and Luella (Rold) Petersen. After graduating high school in 1950, he entered the U.S. Army, serving as a Sergeant and rocket launcher gunner in North Korea during the Korean War. He returned home in 1954 a PROUD veteran with numerous honors, including the Combat Infantry Badge.

GLENWOOD – The Harlan Community Cyclones boys basketball team struggled to overcome a slow offensive start and a strong defensive effort from Glen-wood on Tuesday night, falling to the Rams 69-52 in conference action.
The Cyclones opened the game with good looks offensively but had trouble converting early, beginning with an air ball on their first possession. 

DENISON — The Harlan Community Cyclones boys’ basketball team closed out a busy week in strong fashion, finishing 2–1 and picking up a big road win Friday night with a 67–57 victory over rival Denison-Schleswig.
The game opened slowly for both teams, with the Cyclones not scoring their first field goal until 3:37 remained in the first quarter when Dallas McDowell tied the game at 5–5.

DES MOINES — The HCHS Dance Team earned two Division I ratings at the Iowa State Dance & Drill Team Association’s (ISDTA) State Championships in Des Moines last week.
The team performed in both the Pom and Hip Hop categories. The Pom team placed fifth in their class, while the Hip Hop team finished ninth.
Despite a long season marked by injuries, Coach Bre Fuhs said she is proud of the team’s performance.

NATIONWIDE — President Donald J. Trump, joined by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, members of Congress, and farmers from several states, announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will make $12 billion in one-time bridge payments available to American farmers. The funding is intended to address temporary trade market disruptions and increased production costs.

HARLAN — Longtime Taylor Quik Pik manager Virginia Smith will retire at the end of the year.
“My favorite memories are my customers,” Smith said. “Seeing them every day, joking around and having fun. I will miss that.”
