COUNTY -- Every five years in Iowa, local boards of health lead a community-wide discussion about health needs and decide what can be done about them.    A Shelby County community health survey has been developed and is open for the public to complete.      Public opinion is an important step in this planning process.  WOODBINE -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton’s Evan Wilson was the overall boys champion and the Spartan girls were conference team champions at Monday’s combined Woodbine Cross Country Invite and Rolling Valley Conference Meet held at the Woodbine Athletic Complex. Area teams IKM-Manning, AHSTW and Exira-EHK were all part of the meet, which saw the Underwood girls and Tri-Center boys win team titles. The Exira-EHK girls placed third in the overall

    MANILLA -- Ray “Bubba” Sorensen of Greenfield was in downtown Manilla last week painting the Crawford County Freedom Rock. Sorensen began painting on Sunday and expected to have it completed by the end of the week.

    ELK HORN -- Charles Ray Walter, 75, Elk Horn, died October 9 at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn.    Services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Walnut with burial in the Layton Township Cemetery at Walnut.  Visitation is Tuesday, Oct. 13 from 3-9 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca.    Walter is survived by his wife, Gloria J.

    AVOCA -- Viola S. Skalla, 91, Avoca, died October 9 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Church in Portsmouth with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery at Portsmouth.    A wake service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at the church.  Visitation is Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-8 p.m.

    OMAHA -- Elizabeth Jean “Betty” Klein, 80, Omaha, NE, died September 24 in Omaha.    Services were held Monday, Sept. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Omaha with a graveside service held at 2:30 p.m.
