HARLAN -- On Wednesday, Nov. 4, the Iowa Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Harlan, in the case State of Iowa v. Taquala Monique Howse.    The proceeding will take place at Harlan Community High School’s auditorium.  The oral arguments are open to the public and begin at 7 p.m.    The court will hear attorneys argue in the case.    In State of Iowa vs.

    COUNTY -- Shelby County will pay $20 each for beaver tails from November 1-April 1 as part of an ongoing effort to minimize the damage the critters cause to roadways and structures throughout the county.    The county’s board of supervisors re-authorized the bounty this month, with a total dollar limit outlay of $5,000.  Payments will be made on a first come, first served basis.

      HARLAN -- The 2014-15 Harlan Municipal Utilities audit released recently shows increased operating sales revenues of $60,653 over last year’s figures and decreased expenses of $27,968.    The financial statements include a “Statement of Net Position” which indicates the Utility’s combined net position increased $1,771,245 or 5.4 percent, growing to $34,509,280.    Total operating revenue for the fiscal year was $14,875,557.    Because of

 DENISON -- With an assist or two from Glenwood, the Harlan Community volleyball team is just one win removed from a third consecutive outright championship in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. HCHS improved to 8-1 in league play (32-5 overall) with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-13 sweep at Denison-Schleswig Monday night, maintaining its share of first place with Kuemper Catholic.

 LAKE CITY -- The IKM-Manning Wolves played some of their best volleyball of the year in Tuesday night’s Class 2-A regional opener at South Central Calhoun, then nearly let it all slip away. With their backs squarely up against the wall, however, the Wolves responded in a big way, scoring 15 of the last 21 points to outlast the Titans 25-11, 25-21, 21-25, 22-25, 15-9 and keep their season alive. IKM-Manning improved its record to 15-14 overall

 MISSOURI VALLEY -- Less than two minutes into the game last Friday, IKM-Manning’s Jared Vollstedt returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown against Missouri Valley. He was only getting started. Before the night was over, Vollstedt added two rushing touchdowns, a 94-yard kickoff return TD and a 100-yard interception return score.
