MISSOURI VALLEY -- Missouri Valley put together a 22-2 second-half run to storm past AHSTW, 55-47, in Western Iowa Conference boys basketball action Friday night. The Vikings led by eight points on three occasions in the third quarter before Justin Miller sparked Mo. Valley’s surge with a driving three-point play. Seth Svedja added 11 points during the decisive run and finished with a game-high 23 for the Big Reds.

COUNTY – Shelby Countians heading to the driver’s license office to renew their driver’s license have the option of now selecting the REAL ID, a two-year old program that is hoped to provide more federal security and cut down on identity theft and fraudulent activity.    Iowa began implementation of the REAL ID in 2013.

    COUNTY – Roger Schmitz has been named chairman of the Shelby County Board of Supervisors this year, and will preside over a board that is currently working diligently to prepare next year’s budget.    Schmitz is joined on the board by supervisors Charlie Parkhurst and Steve Kenkel.    Schmitz was unanimously elected chairman while Kenkel was unanimously elected vice-chairman of the 2016 board.

    COUNTY – Most elected officials in Shelby County will see a 2.5 percent salary increase under a proposal approved by the county’s board of supervisors Tuesday.    After hearing recommendations from the county’s compensation board, the supervisors voted to implement the 2.5 percent increase for the auditor, treasurer, recorder, attorney and sheriff (and chief deputy).  The three supervisors will not receive an increase next year.    The com

    AVOCA -- Leora Torres of Avoca will observe her 100th birthday on February 3. Leora’s family includes one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Dick Johnson, Lincoln, NE; two grandchildren and five great-grandsons.    A native of rural Walnut, Leora attended country school from kindergarten through the 8th grade, and graduated from Walnut High School in 1933. In 1968 she took a job as a clerk in the Pottawattamie County Courthouse in Avoca.

    WESTPHALIA -- Harold and Pearl Schulte of Westphalia will mark their 60th wedding anniversary on February 6.    Their family is planning a card shower in their honor. Cards will reach them if sent to 841-1580th Street, Earling, IA 51530. They are planning to celebrate with their family on a vacation this spring.     

    OMAHA, NE -- Harlan Reuel King, 66, Omaha, died January 26 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 30 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama with burial at a later date in the Washington Township Cemetery in Panama.      A rosary was held Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at St. Wenceslaus in Omaha, and a rosary also will be held Friday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. at the St.

    HARLAN -- Lyle Arthur Norton, 86, Harlan, died January 25 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services were held Thursday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.    Norton is survived by his wife, Jacquetta Norton, of Harlan; sons Brad Norton of Avoca and Tracey Norton of Harlan; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
