Cyclone boys avenge Glenwood

Viking wrestlers win first sectional title

 OAKLAND -- Scoring 240 points and sending eight wrestlers to the next round, AHSTW earned its first sectional wrestling championship in school history Saturday with a dominant performance at the Class 1-A Sectional Tournament in Oakland. With the team victory, the Vikings advance to Tuesday’s 1-A Regional Dual meet in Sloan. They will face OA-BCIG in the semifinal round at 6:00 p.m., with the winner advancing to face Westwood or Hinton.

Helen Holloway, 94

    MANILLA -- Helen Olive Holloway, 94, Manilla, died February 9 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Irwin with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Irwin.  Visitation is Friday, Feb. 12 from 5-9 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m.

Lawrence Rasmussen, 86

    ELK HORN -- Lawrence M. “Rass” Rasmussen, 86, Elk Horn, formerly of Harlan, died Monday, Feb. 8 in Elk Horn.    Services were held Thursday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m.

Verlee Henningsen, 89

    COLUMBIA, MO -- Verlee Mae Henningsen, 89, Columbia, MO, formerly of Shelby County, died February 7 at her home.    A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.    Henningsen is survived by children Blaine (Cheryl) of Jefferson City, MO, Dane of Kansas City, MO and Jane of Kansas City; and two grandsons.    Parker Funeral Service in Columbia, MO is in charge of arrangements. 

Birthday Milestones - JoAnn Weihs

    AVOCA -- The family of JoAnn Weihs is planning a card shower in honor of her 85th birthday on February 11. Cards will reach her if sent c/o Avoca Lodge Assisted Living, 612 E. York Rd. #13,  Avoca, IA 51521.    JoAnn and her husband, Wilfred, will also celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary on February 11.   

ENGAGEMENTS - Maggie Dust and Todd DeWees

    ST. LOUIS, MO -- Maggie Dust and Todd DeWees both of St. Louis will exchange marriage vows on April 22 in a ceremony at 9th Street Abbey in St. Louis.    Parents of the couple are Cecil and Mary Ann Dust, Ellisville, MO; and former Harlan residents Doug and Laurel DeWees, Maricopa, AZ. Todd is the grandson of Bonnie Peterson, Harlan. 

ANNIVERSARIES - Sharon and Richard Daberkow

    HARLAN -- Richard and Sharon Daberkow of Harlan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their family on February 6.    They also plan to celebrate their anniversary along with a brother’s 50th birthday, a brother’s 60th birthday and a sister and brother-in-law’s 65th wedding anniversary this summer.

County proposes $129,000 tax asking increase

    COUNTY – Shelby County’s tax asking will increase roughly $129,000 under a budget proposed to be adopted by the Shelby County Board of Supervisors today, Tuesday, Feb. 9.    A hearing on the 2016-17 county budget will be held at 9 a.m.
