   REGIONAL -- Coronavirus cases continue to rise across Iowa, including locally, as the 14-day positivity rate has risen to more than 27 percent in Shelby County with 668 confirmed cases as of Thursday morning, Nov.

Playin’ for a State Title!

    CEDAR FALLS -- The title game drought is officially over.    For the first time since 2009, the Harlan Community football team is headed back to the Class 3A championship game following Thursday’s dominating 44-7 win over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in a semifinal game at the UNI-Dome.    The top-seeded Cyclones (11-0) will face North Scott (8-1) in the 3A title game Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m.

Rueschenberg, Anderson voted board leadership

    HARLAN – Amy Rueschenberg has been re-elected president and Jessica Anderson vice-president of the Harlan Community Schools Board of Education  for another year.    The two were approved unanimously by board vote last week.  There were no other nominations for office.

Eagle Scout earns all 137 badges

    AVOCA -- Jack Klitgaard, an Eagle Scout from Troop 90 in Harlan, had a goal of earning his Eagle Scout. In December of 2018, he made this goal a reality and along the way completed all 137 merit badges that Scouting has to offer.    Klitgaard methodically worked to earn all 137 merit badges throughout his Scouting career, finishing his last merit badges on July 15, a few days before turning 18 years old.

Veterans Day Eagle Dedication

    AVOCA -- Jerry Conroy plays Taps during Veterans Day ceremonies at Eagles Landing Travel Plaza in Avoca.  American Legion Fred Funston Post #227 also held a flag-raising ceremony at the facility, as part of a dedication event for the new owners of the travel plaza.

Masks now required in county buildings

    COUNTY – Shelby County has implemented a mask mandate that requires the wearing of a face covering for the public and county employees while in the administrative areas of county buildings, including the courthouse in Harlan.    The county’s board of supervisors approved the mandate last week, effective immediately.    “Anybody who enters or is present in the courthouse or any administrative office in the county is required to wear a mask,

Long-term care facilities report outbreaks

    COUNTY – Two long-term care (LTC) facilities in Shelby County have joined others across the state announcing COVID-19 positive cases amongst their residents.    The State of Iowa’s coronavirus website reports as of Thursday, Nov.

Holiday Adoption Program officially under way

    REGIONAL – The annual holiday adoption program is under way with a number of needy families hoping to receive some assistance this holiday season.    Administration of the adoption program is being handled by West Central Community Action, and the Harlan Newspapers remains actively involved in promoting and publicizing the adoptions.    Applications for families wishing to be adopted will be accepted now until December 11.  Children 18 and

Board of Health asks local citizens to follow guidance

    COUNTY -- The Shelby County Board of Health is requesting that all Shelby County residents follow public health guidance to reduce transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.    These preventative measures include wearing masks in public, social distancing of six feet or more in public, and staying home if you are sick.    The Board of Health said as of November 10, positivity rates have risen to the current level of 24.8%, the 19th highes
