 HARLAN -- Prior to Harlan Community’s final home football game October 12, the entire Cyclone varsity squad walked through the Elm Crest Senior Living building to greet residents of nursing and assisted living. The Cyclones went on to defeat Creston 48-0 later that evening.

 OSKALOOSA (Oct. 26) -- When the Harlan Community football team travels 163 miles to face Oskaloosa in Friday’s Class 3A playoff opener, it will meet an opponent with strikingly-similar offensive credentials. The 7th-ranked Indians (8-1) have totaled the sixth-most yards in 3A with 3,446 and scored 46 offensive touchdowns.

 GLENWOOD (Oct. 18) -- For the first time in three years, Harlan Community cross country coach Doug Renkly will be taking a full squad of runners to the state meet in Fort Dodge.

 GUTHRIE CENTER (Oct. 18) -- AHSTW sophomores Chloe Falkena and Julia Kock will compete in the state cross country meet for the second straight year following their performances at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Guthrie Center October 18. Falkena placed eighth out of 127 runners with a five-kilometer time of 22:10 and Kock placed 13th in 22:29.

 COON RAPIDS (Oct. 19) -- Cole Burmeister’s six touchdowns and 385 yards from scrimmage led the way Friday night as the Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton football team wrapped up an Eight-Player, District 8 title with a 54-21 victory at Coon Rapids-Bayard. The 8th-ranked Spartans finished the regular season 8-1 overall (6-1 in the district) and will now host Stanton (7-2) in the first round of the playoffs this Friday (Oct.

 AVOCA (Oct. 19) -- A valiant second-half comeback lifted AHSTW past St. Albert 19-14 Friday night as the Viking football team capped an unbeaten regular season and claimed the Class A, District 9 championship over the Falcons. Down 14-0 at the half, AHSTW rallied behind three second-half touchdowns, including Blake Osbahr’s 13-yard TD pass to Drake Partridge with 2:43 remaining.  HOLSTEIN (Oct. 19) -- The IKM-Manning football team fell five points short of qualifying for the Class A playoffs last Friday following a 24-19 loss at Ridge View. A victory would have forced a three-way tie for first place in Class A, District 2 with Alta-Aurelia and Sioux Central, locking all three teams into the playoffs.
