SHELBY COUNTY — National 4-H Week will be celebrated October 5–11, 2025, and will inspire and connect the nation’s 6 million 4-H’ers, 3,500 educators, 500,000 volunteers, and 35 million alumni. This year’s theme, “Beyond Ready,” highlights how 4-H prepares members for life and careers by giving them the skills, resilience, and leadership needed in a rapidly changing world.

Dixie Ann Thompson was born on February 2, 1931 to Roy and Anna Larson in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized at the Irwin Church of Christ and graduated from Irwin High School in 1948.Following graduation Dixie attended Barnes Beauty School for one year where she met her first husband, Phillip Gallagher. They were married in Council Bluffs, Iowa and together welcomed their son Patrick.

CARROLL – The Harlan Community Cyclones dropped their district opener to the Carroll Tigers on Friday night, falling 33-28 in a back-and-forth contest.

NEOLA – The area teams of HCHS, IKM-Manning, AHSTW, and Exira-EHK all competed Tuesday afternoon at the Tri-Center Invitational held at Quail Run Golf Course in Neola.The boys’ race kicked off first, with HCHS junior Jeffrey Gross leading the area finishers in third place overall with a time of 16:43.03.IKM-Manning senior Camden Morris followed in 11th (17:40.45), just ahead of sophomore teammate Akeo Maynard, who placed 14th (17:53.85).

SHELBY COUNTY — Area candidates have filed their paperwork for the upcoming city and school board elections, according to the Shelby County Auditor’s Office. Voting for the Iowa City/School Election will take place on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

Charles Leo Klein was born on April 1, 1934, to Alfons and Marcella (Langenfeld) Klein near Earling, Iowa. He was raised on a farm north of Earling. Charles was baptized and later confirmed his faith at St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he remained a lifelong member. He received his education at St. Joseph Catholic Schools and graduated with the Class of 1952.
