MONDAMIN -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton recovered from an awful second quarter by finishing the game on an 11-1 run and winning at West Harrison, 48-39, in boys basketball action last Tuesday. The Spartans entered the holiday break with a 5-3 overall record and 5-2 Rolling Valley Conference mark. They will return to action Tuesday, January 5, for a home game vs.

HARLAN - The Harlan Community School District accepted the resignation of longtime teacher and coach, Steve Daeges, effective at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. Daeges began his 37-year teaching career, starting in the Ashland Greenwood, NE, School System in 1979.    He began coaching baseball in Harlan in 1994 while commuting from his teaching job at Ashland Greenwood.

    COUNTY – The eyes of the nation will be upon the State of Iowa February 1 for the Republican and Democratic Caucuses, and Shelby County will be included in the national media spotlight.    Republican caucus participants will elect delegates, alternate delegates and junior delegates to the Shelby County Republican Convention.  In addition, they will elect two people to serve on the Shelby County Republican Party Central Committee.    Democr

    HARLAN -- Agnes Goetzinger will celebrate her 90th birthday on January 3, 2016 at an open house from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the McKee Room at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan. OMAHA -- Jerry and Deb McCarthy of Avoca announce the engagement of their daughter, Caitlin Ann to Thomas Lawrence Gruis both of Omaha. Thomas is the son of Todd and Jane Gruis, Clear Lake, IA.    The couple will wed on March 5, 2016 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Omaha. 

    PANAMA - Services for Kathryn Huebert, 40, were held on Sat., December 26 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Panama. Huebert died on Tues., Dec. 22 at Creighton Univ. Medical Center, Omaha.    She is survived by her mother, Ruth (Wegner) Huebert, Panma and her sister, Anne Cundiff, Waukee.
