DES MOINES -- The Harlan Community and AHSTW boys track teams have qualified a combined five entries for this week’s 107th annual Drake Relays in Des Moines. High school events will be held Thursday-Saturday, April 28-30, in conjunction with competition at the college and university levels, Rio Olympic Games previews, Special Elite Invitationals and Masters Division events.

 MANILLA -- The IKM-Manning golf teams secured three out of four medalist spots Friday and earned a co-ed dual sweep over Tri-Center at the Manning-Manilla Golf Course. The IKM-M girls won by seven strokes (240-247) and the boys won by 31 strokes (170-201) in near-perfect playing conditions. Wolves’ senior Jared Vollstedt was the boys medalist after shooting a 5-over-par round of 41 and teammate Austin Ahrenholtz was the runner-up medalist, al

 HARLAN -- Harlan Community graduate and current Iowa State standout Jess Schaben will serve as a guest clinician at the 2016 Harlan Community Cyclone Volleyball Camps, set for Thursday-Friday, June 9-10. The camp will be divided into four sections. Grades 9-12 will meet from 8:00-10:00 a.m. and grades 6-8 will meet from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. both days in the high school gym. Grades 3-5 will meet from 8:30-10:00 a.m.

 GLENWOOD -- Glenwood boys basketball coach Curt Schulte was recognized following the season as the Class 3-A, Substate 8 Coach of the Year by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association. Curt is a 1989 Harlan Community graduate and the son of Harold and Pearl Schulte, rural Earling. Schulte guided the Glenwood boys to a 19-5 record this past season, marking the second-most wins in school history.

 HARLAN -- Harlan Community studies teacher and coach John Murtaugh has been named the new defensive coordinator of the HCHS football team, replacing long-time assistant coach Ken Carstens, who retired following the 2015 season. Murtaugh has been the Cyclones’ head wrestling coach the last 13 years and has been involved with the Cyclone football program since 2005, serving as the defensive coordinator of the freshmen team for 11 years.

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community girls tennis team lost all nine varsity matches against Shenandoah here Thursday, dropping the Cyclones to 0-4 on the season. The Fillies improved to 5-0. Senior Maggie McGrath played the most competitive singles match for HCHS, losing 8-4 to Jordyn Lembrick. The Cyclone girls will play four meets on the road this week: Monday at Atlantic, Tuesday at St.

 SHENANDOAH -- Michael Rueschenberg’s 10-7 win in the number-three singles match helped swing the momentum to Harlan Community’s side Thursday as the Cyclone boys tennis team got back to the .500 mark with a 6-3 dual victory at Shenandoah.

 DENISON -- The Harlan Community girls soccer team answered both Denison-Schleswig goals in the first half Friday night but was held scoreless over the final 40 minutes of a 3-2 road loss to the Monarchs. After being shut out in its previous three matches, HCHS finally generated some offensive opportunities but was unable to avoid a fifth straight loss.

 HARLAN -- Paige Powers shot a medalist round of 46 and Amber Gross was runner-up medalist with a 52 on Tuesday, leading the Harlan Community girls golf team to a dual victory over Glenwood at the Harlan Golf and Country Club. Ideal weather conditions and soft greens helped HCHS cut 56 strokes off their season-opening team score April 7 on the same course.
