HARLAN — Many gathered Thursday at The Grounds for a TeamMates pep rally.DeMoine Adams, TeamMates CEO, provide an introduction about the program that began 31 years ago. It was cofounded by Tom and Nancy Osborne.The program is in 192 school districts, serving more than 10,000 students and in five states.“We feel like we just got started,” Adams said.

AREA — When Melanie Bruck recently walked into a first grade classroom at Irwin Elementary School, she invited the children to clap four times and chant “ag-ri-cul-ture.” It’s part of the Ag in the Classroom program.“We incorporate Iowa agriculture into the lesson plans. Not everyone has an agricultural background,” Bruck said.

HARLAN — Every year Harlan Fire Department conducts a driver training course.“When you get firefighters that join our department, we have a wide variety of occupations that come along with it, some of them are truck drivers by trade,” said Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen.

MANNING — Manning now has the uniqueness of possessing the first Charters of Freedom display in the State of Iowa; and only the second display west of the Mississippi. This permanent display is very special, and Manning is proud to make it available for public viewing.

HARLAN – Ten local organizations received foundation grants from the Monogram Foods Loves Kids Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Monogram Foods. A committee of team members at the Monogram Foods manufacturing facility in Harlan, IA divided a total of $60,000 between the charities.    Several of the recipients gathered Thursday to meet each other and share how their grants will help their organizations.

HARLAN — Time to get on your walking shoes.    The Healthiest State Annual Walk will be held on Wednesday. Since 2011, the Healthiest State Initiative has engaged hundreds of thousands of Iowans in schools, worksites and communities across the state to walk for 30 minutes.

HARLAN — With nearly 40 years of service to the Harlan Newspapers, Mike Kolbe has been named General Manager of the twice-weekly publication.     HARLAN — When Mitch Osborn looked back, three rows up to the right from the bench, he saw Cliff Tamm and his wife, Judy, supporting Harlan basketball.    Cliff Tamm, 88, died Sept. 24.    “They are great community members and always Harlan Cyclone fans.”    When Osborn was coaching his Elk Horn team, he said Tamm treated the Elk Horn team like his own.    “He was a very positive person, a positive coach and very likeable,” Osborn said.
