Housing rehab applications available in Elk Horn

    ELK HORN -- The City of Elk Horn, with Southwest Iowa Planning Council, is accepting applications from homeowners for the Elk Horn Housing Rehabilitation Program through October 30.

Myrtue board approves re-roof project proposal

    HARLAN -- Myrtue Medical Center Board of Trustees has accepted the lowest submitted proposal of $118,857 from RL Craft Roofing (Denison) to re-roof the medical/surgical building portion of Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Chuck Assman, facilities director at MMC, said the roof (11,400 square foot area) on the building, built in 1964, was overlaid with Durolast overlayment 18 years ago and has been patched in several places since that ti

Local candidates unopposed for November election

    COUNTY – Harlan Mayor Gene Gettys, Jr. will be seeking his third term in office, and will run unopposed in November’s election.    Gettys and a host of others in communities throughout Shelby County filed nomination papers by the deadline Thursday, Sept. 17, for positions as mayor or on local city councils.

Harlan moving forward with abandoned property acquisition

HARLAN -- The City of Harlan has filed a petition in Shelby County District Court this month, seeking title to an abandoned property located at 904 Court St.    According to court documents, the defendant is Jan Eric Pusch, trustee of the Jan Eric Pusch Revocable Trust dated July 10, 2011, as the owner of the real estate, dwelling and buildings at 904 Court St.  Documents said Pusch is from Omaha. 

City of Harlan seeks grant for outdoor movie screen

    HARLAN -- Public support is needed through resident voting for a project that, if funded, will pay for a movie screen that can be utilized in the community.    The Movie in the Park project is a team effort between the city and Harlan Community Schools.  The groups are seeking a $6,900 grant from The Wellmark Foundation, to purchase a movie screen that would allow for the playing of movies at Pioneer Park or within the schools.

    HARLAN --  The counselors in the Harlan Community School District understand how important it is for a student to feel welcomed at school.    “Kids who feel loved at home come to school to learn,” said Leanne Travis. “Kids who may not feel loved at home come to school to feel loved.

King Talks Immigration, Iran Deal

HARLAN -- U.S. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) held a town hall meeting in Harlan Monday, Sept. 14, meeting with constituents and discussing federal topics, including everything from immigration and energy policy to the Iran deal and monetary appropriations.    Only a handful of individuals turned out for the event, held at the Pizza Ranch.

    HARLAN --  Most teachers or school staff say working with students yields many rewards, but there also are challenges every day.    The staff and faculty in the Harlan Community School District have strived to provide the best education for their students, as well as opportunities for involvement in a variety of extracurricular activities.    Stories of success from students in the school district and beyond can make that effort worthwhile

STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT OLD-TIME FARMING AT CARSTENS YOUTH DAY

SHELBY -- Approximately 415 students from A-H-S-T, Harlan Community, Underwood, Tri-Center, Shelby County Catholic, Iowa School for the Deaf, M and M Academy in Council Bluffs, Mindful Learning Center in Council Bluffs and Home School from Omaha and Council Bluffs area traveled to Carstens Farm Friday for the annual Carstens Youth Day.    The students learned about old-time farming and got to try their hands at some of the exhibits at the farm
