HCHS girls track shows growth, strong relay performances at OABCIG Coed
DA GROVE — The Harlan Community girls track and field team turned in a productive outing Friday at the OABCIG meet, using strong relay performances and continued improvement across events to finish fourth as a team with 87 points.
Despite a limited roster of just 12 athletes competing, the Cyclones made the most of their opportunities and showed measurable progress as the postseason approaches.
Harlan was led by its relay units, starting with a first-place finish in the 4x800 relay. The team of Aspen Bieker, Ava Freund, Sadie Alberti, and Allie Anderson posted a winning time of 10:40.13.
The Cyclones added another victory in the distance medley relay, where Ellerie Nelson, Brinley Van Baale, Aubree Wegner, and Julia Heslink crossed the line in 4:24.61.
The sprint medley relay also delivered a strong performance, finishing second in 1:52.93 behind the team of Ari Daniels, Paige Sonderman, Aubree Wegner, and Julia Heslink.
Harlan added a third-place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay (1:15.97) and closed the night with a runner-up finish in the 4x400 relay (4:14.45), with Wegner, Nelson, Bieker, and Heslink combining for a strong effort.
Individually, Ava Freund and Sadie Alberti led the way in the 800-meter run, placing second and third with times of 2:36.86 and 2:37.65.
In the distance events, Ashlyn Rau placed second in the 1500-meter run (5:27.10) and added a strong show-ing in the 3000 (12:04.16), while Allie Anderson continued her improvement with a sixth-place finish in the 1500 (5:42.15).
In the hurdles, Ari Daniels recorded a time of 17.00 in the 100-meter hurdles, while Paige Sonderman showed strong technique throughout the shuttle hurdle relay. Brinley Van Baale added points with a fourth-place fin-ish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:15.13).
Harlan also saw contributions in the sprints, with Paige Sonderman finishing fourth in the 200 (28.82) and Ainsley Mages placing seventh (29.83).
Head coach Jenny Hamilton said the meet marked an important step forward for the Cyclones as they continue to push toward the postseason.“We’re at a point in the season where we’re asking the girls to find that next level, and they responded,” Hamilton said.
“We dropped time across the board, including three seconds in the sprint medley, 20 seconds in the distance medley, and two seconds in the 4x400.”
The improvement was especially noticeable in the distance events, where runners attacked races more aggressively.“Our 800 runners did a much better job getting out in that first 400, and Allie cut over 15 seconds in the 1500,” Hamilton said.
Hurdle technique also showed progress, as Sonderman maintained a four-step rhythm throughout the shuttle hurdle relay, while Daniels continues to close in on a sub-17 performance in the 100 hurdles.
The Cyclones also showed flexibility in their lineup, with Ellerie Nelson stepping into a key role in the 4x400 relay and Julia Heslink delivering a strong anchor leg to cap the night.“This meet was highly productive for us,” Hamilton said.
“Now it’s about continuing to build on that momentum.”
The HCHS girls will be back in action on Tuesday in Missouri Valley for the Lady Red Relays which begin a 4:30.
