Harlan FFA members compete in Southwest Iowa District Career Development Event Day
ATLANTIC — Sixteen members of the Harlan FFA Chapter competed in the Southwest Iowa District Career Development Event (CDE) Day on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Cass County Fairgrounds in Atlantic. More than 600 FFA members from across the district participated in a variety of competitions, including Agronomy, Floriculture, Farm Business Management and Livestock Judging.
Edie Mae Kaufmann competed individually in Farm Business Management, earning second place overall. The contest tested students’ knowledge of basic farm financial management concepts and their ability to apply them to real-world agricultural business situations. Competitors completed a written test and a problem-solving activity.
Harlan FFA entered two teams in Livestock Judging. The first team, consisting of Olivia Kelley, Jaeda Youngkin, Ashley Tunender and Hayden Thygesen, placed 20th overall. The second team, made up of Emma Catron, Hannah Catron, Quinn Gross-Schneider and Masen Pritz, finished 41st overall.
Livestock Judging participants evaluated animals in market and breeding classes and answered questions related to the competition.
Lane Larsen represented Harlan FFA in the Agronomy CDE. The competition featured a team problem-solving event and identification classes covering crop nutrient deficiencies, crop diseases, crop plants, weed plants, equipment, insects and grain defects.
Two Harlan FFA teams also competed in Floriculture. The team of McKenna Wohlhutter, Josie Daniels and Stephanie Lopez placed 10th overall, while Kenadi Dunn, Maya Boettger and Phoenix Brewer earned 17th place.
The Floriculture competition tested students’ knowledge through floral identification, a general floriculture exam and a problem-solving activity. Teams also demonstrated their floral design skills by creating a bouquet and boutonniere.
The district event provided Harlan FFA members with opportunities to demonstrate their agricultural knowledge, develop career-related skills and compete alongside FFA members from across southwest Iowa.
