HARLAN – The City of Harlan has been awarded a Trees for Kids grant in the amount of $2,500 from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to support the planting of new trees in the community.City Administrator Gervas Mgonja said the grant will allow the City to improve parks and public spaces while involving local students in the process.“We are excited to receive this grant, which will help us grow and sustain a healthy tree canopy in Harlan. These new plantings will also help replace trees lost to the emerald ash borer, ensuring our community remains shaded and beautiful for years to come,” Mgonja said.As part of the initiative, Harlan students will assist with tree planting, working alongside City staff. Planting locations will be chosen to provide shade, improve air quality, and enhance the beauty of community spaces.Janet Buman added, “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to take part in a project that directly impacts their community. It gives them hands-on experience in conservation while helping make Harlan a greener place to live.”The City of Harlan looks forward to the positive environmental and educational impacts this project will bring, continuing its commitment to creating a vibrant and sustainable community.
