Baughman receives the 2026 Distinguished Adjunct Teaching Award from IWCC
HARLAN — Elaine Baughman was recently honored with the 2026 Distinguished Adjunct Teaching Award during a staff development event at Iowa Western Community College (IWCC), recognizing her dedication to education and her lasting impact on students.
Baughman spent more than 35 years teaching high school special education in Harlan before retiring from the K-12 classroom. Her retirement, however, did not mark the end of her career in education. For more than eight years, she has continued sharing her knowledge and experience as an adjunct instructor at Iowa Western’s Shelby County Center, helping prepare the next generation of educators.
Amy McGraw, department chair for education at Iowa Western, said Baughman’s commitment to student success and inclusive education has made a lasting difference.
Baughman draws on decades of classroom experience to mentor future teachers, helping them develop the skills and compassion needed to support students with diverse learning needs. McGraw noted that Baughman recognizes the potential in every learner and works to ensure students feel valued and capable of succeeding.
The impact of Baughman’s teaching is reflected in feedback from her students. One Iowa Western student shared, “I was going through hard times this semester and she did everything in her power to help me succeed.”
Another student praised her approach to instruction, saying, “She is an amazing instructor who always gives amazing feedback that builds confidence and positivity in the classroom and makes things fun!”
Lori Stirtz, IWCC Shelby County Center director, said Baughman’s contributions are especially meaningful to the local community.
“I am so pleased to have Elaine teaching here at the Shelby County Center. Her dedication to our community and the success of area students is truly appreciated,” Stirtz said.
Through her years of service in Harlan and her continued work at Iowa Western, Baughman has helped students succeed while strengthening the teaching profession. The 2026 Distinguished Adjunct Teaching Award recognizes her lifelong dedication to education, her commitment to supporting diverse learners and her continued influence on future educators.
