Adopt-A-Family list grows; applications will be accepted through Dec. 1

SHELBY COUNTY — West Central Community Action (WCCA) is now accepting applications from families and individuals requesting assistance this holiday season through the Shelby County Adopt-A-Family Program.
Applications will be accepted through December 1, 2025.
Families with children ages 18 and under, and seniors ages 65 and older, who reside in Shelby County and are at or below 200% of the federal poverty level or LIHEAP eligible, may apply.
This program helps families who are facing financial hardship and may be unable to afford a Christmas dinner, new toys, or warm clothing for their children. The Shelby County Holiday Adoption Program strives to bring warmth, comfort, and hope to local families during the holidays and winter season.

WCCA is also seeking  sponsors and donors
Each year, WCCA partners with individuals, businesses, churches, schools, and community organizations to make the holidays brighter for local families in need.
Last year, the program assisted 67 families, representing 195 children and seniors. With continued community support, we hope to reach even more families this year.
How you can help:
•    Make a Financial Donation – Mail a check to WCCA Administrative Office, PO Box 709, Harlan, IA 51537.
(Please write “Shelby County Christmas” in the memo line. Contributions are pooled together to support families and are listed as anonymous in the newspaper.)
•    Adopt a Family – Receive a family’s profile and wish list to shop for their specific needs and wishes.
The estimated cost to sponsor a family is around $75–$100 per person, but any level of support is appreciated.
Each week, WCCA will share an updated list of families available for adoption in the Harlan Newspapers. Donors can choose a family by number and contact WCCA to receive their wish list.
Gift drop-off  information:
Gifts may be dropped off Thursday, December 11, 2025 at the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce & Industry Atrium, 1901 Hawkeye Ave., Harlan, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Gift Distribution to families will be Friday, December 12, 2025, from 8:00 AM–4:00 PM.

WCCA encourages businesses and groups to sponsor families rather than host toy drives. Families with young children are typically adopted first, so gift cards for teens and older children (clothing stores, restaurants, local attractions, etc.) are especially appreciated.
