Vikings season cut short by Lady Reds

"I think the future of AHSTW volleyball is bright and I’m excited to see the growth and improvement of those athletes returning next year.” -Kelsey Muxfeldt, AHSTW Head Volleyball Coach

Wednesday night on the road, the AHSTW Vikings varsity volleyball team battled the Missouri Valley Lady Reds (32-6) in the Class 2A Region 3 Quarterfinal, but lost in three straight sets; 25-12, 25-6 and 25-16.

The Vikings were led by Freshman Halle Goodman with 12 assists, Junior Delaney Goshorn with two blocks and Senior Grace Porter with 12 digs. It was not enough as the Lady Reds overpowered them en route to victory.

“It’s never ideal to end your season,” said Head Coach Kelsey Muxfeldt. “We talked a lot about believing in ourselves and what we are capable of and how important that is to the success of our program and culture. We also talked about all the positives we had throughout the season.”

Muxfeldt credited the Lady Reds for their success and victory as they move forward in the postseason to take on the Southwest Valley Timberwolves in the Class 2A Region 3 Semifinal.

“Missouri Valley is a well-balanced team and they did a good job of keeping us out of system,” she said. “We were struggling to get good passes which slowed down our offensive production. As a team, we didn’t play our best game, but I am proud of all of them for continuing to fight throughout the night.”

Muxfeldt highlighted what she felt stood out throughout their season, as they finished with a final record of 9-25.

“I think the biggest highlight for us is the improvement we saw as a team this season,” she added. “We showed improvement in every aspect of the game from the beginning of the season until the end of the season. With a young and inexperienced team, this is what we wanted to focus on, getting 1% better everyday.”

Four seniors playing in their final match were Grace Porter, Ella Stamp, Kaleah Guyer and Hannah Nielson, but the underclassmen are expected to return and improve next season.

“This senior group has put a lot of time and effort into this program,” Muxfeldt said. “I am so thankful for them and their leadership throughout the season. I think the future of AHSTW volleyball is bright and I’m excited to see the growth and improvement of those athletes returning next year.”
