Viking rally falls just short vs. Mustangs

AVOCA -- AHSTW’s fourth-quarter comeback fell two points short Friday night as the Viking football team lost their season opener to Shenandoah by a final of 24-22.
The Vikings, who turned the ball over five times, trailed 14-0 at the half and 24-7 after three quarters before scoring twice in the final period. They forced a defensive stop in the final minute and got the ball back inside their own 30 with about 20 seconds to go, but did not have enough time to mount a game-winning drive.
Junior running back Morgan Cotten had a huge game for the Mustangs, catching two passes for 139 yards (one a 70-yard touchdown), rushing for 66 yards and one TD and returning a kickoff 63 yards to set up a short field. He also recovered a fumble on defense.
Shenandoah quarterback Zayne Zwickel completed 8-of-13 passes for 193 yards and two scores.

AHSTW Stat Leaders:

Rushing - Denver Pauley 28-181 (1 TD), Blake Holst 9-64 (1 TD). Passing - Holst 12-24-3, 177 (1 TD). Receiving - Raydden Grobe 5-81, Jace Peterson 2-52, Blake Tuma 4-30 (1 TD).
