Viking baseball team holds off Wolves

AVOCA (June 8) -- Blake Holst struck out Max Nielsen looking with the tying run in scoring position Tuesday night as AHSTW held off IKM-Manning 3-2 in Western Iowa Conference baseball action.
A hit batsman, a walk and two wild pitches allowed the Wolves to pull within one run in the top of the seventh before Holst was able to slam the door shut.
The Vikings improved to 3-4 on the year - all WIC games - going into Thursday’s game at Audubon and Friday’s home game against Tri-Center.
“We had an exciting game with the Wolves,” stated AHSTW head coach Jason Holst. “I thought the key to the game was our solid defense working behind our pitching as we were able to work out of some tough situations.
“Senior Blake Holst had a nice game in relief, not allowing a hit after the fourth inning with the help from our defense. I think our whole team - JV and varsity - played with resilience tonight.”
Sophomore Brayden Lund pitched the first two innings for AHSTW, allowing one run on one hit while battling his control (five walks) and striking out one.
Holst pitched the last five innings, surrendering one hit and one run. He walked one, hit a batter and struck out five.
Trailing 1-0, the Vikings scored one run in the third and two in the fourth to take the lead.
Holst went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and one run scored to lead the offense. Lund had an RBI single and Jordan Ratzlaff and Jacob Coon also had hits.
Nielsen took the pitching loss for IKM-Manning, which dropped to 2-6 in the WIC and overall. The Wolves were swept by Coon Rapids-Bayard 10-4 and 5-0 on Wednesday night in the completion of a suspended doubleheader from May 25.
