Veteran Cyclones look for more success on the mats
HARLAN -- There was a strange feeling in the air last February when the Harlan Community wrestling season came to a close at the district meet in Atlantic.
The 2014-15 Cyclones had improved their dual win total by three - going 18-8 - placed sixth in the rugged Hawkeye Ten dual standings and conference tournament for the second straight season and advanced five wrestlers from sectionals to districts for the sixth year in a row. Only one thing was missing, however. For the first time since 1986, HCHS did not qualify a single wrestler for the State Tournament in Des Moines.
As the 2015-16 campaign moves into January, the Cyclones are hoping for bigger and better things behind an experienced lineup featuring 12 returning letter winners and 10 varsity starters back from a year ago. HCHS graduated just one senior in veteran 106-pounder Wil Beach, who finished his career with 104 wins, and have far more upperclassmen filling the lineup card this winter.
